Hey,

Wasn’t really sure where to put this. I want to make some healthy changes in my lifestyle (exercise, healthy eating, etc.) but I am really having trouble developing these as habits. I was thinking of trying this… making an mp3 recording of my health goals for that day… for example…

The mp3 of my voice would say… “I will eat fruit for breakfast, I will eat a salad for lunch, I will go to the gym at 4pm, I will eat eat plenty of veggies for dinner, I will be in bed for 10pm…” and then I would just listen to that over and over on my ipod… I figure it will just drill it into my thinking and help a lot… I’ve pretty much tried everything else to try and get this new lifestyle to stick but I’m having trouble…

I’m not sure if this is considered hypnosis or a way to encourage better thoughts. I see it no different than writing down my goals for the day on a piece of paper and then reading it over several times so that I am motivated to follow through…

Any thoughts?

I was taught self-hypnosis, and this sounds like it to me, but I never used mp3. I couldn’t find anything in the Catechism on hypnosis, but found this old (2007) response on CAF when I googled, which I liked: “According to the statement below found on the Vatican website, hypnosis compromises who we are in God. Christianity calls for personal repentance and daily struggle to overcome sin and the inclination to do so by the Grace of God, prayer, fasting, and obedience…”

Have you tried fasting? It works best for me - a little juice or liquid breakfast thru most of the day, then supper. Good luck.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with giving yourself positive suggestions. However, I would try something else like putting a dollar or even 50 cents in a jar every time you achieve one of your desired behaviors. That way, you can see some tangible sign of your progress and then use the money to treat yourself to something special.
