I have to be honest that I easily self-pitied myself, which I hate so much so many times. But I lost control most of the times
Don’t know why, perhaps of my shyness & don’t really like to be in spotlight if I do something right & being praised, etc. But I also hate it so much to be hated or even pitied because of my self-pity… What the hell… Please pray for me for this issue I’m facing myself…

Now about mercy. Jesus taught us to have mercy, which I can’t really grasp how?
Is mercy the same as pity, as in pitying someone else?

Thank you everyone.

Mercy isn’t the same as pity.

Mercy is dealing with a person with love towards that person and not with full justice in mind when there has been some wrong committed.

Jesus’ most profound attribute, I believe, is His mercy.

In justice, however, we all actually deserve hell for our sins. But in his mercy, Jesus came down to Earth to remedy this situation. We have all sinned- we’ve blown it and that means some price had to be paid if men and women were to escape hell which they justly deserved.

Jesus came down and payed that price at a very great cost to himself through his unspeakable unfathomable Passion. That was an act of Mercy.

Pity is more a passive emotion of some kind of sympathy towards some creature. I supose though that pity does have a relationship to mercy. However, Mercy is far nobler than pity because it involves going that extra step towards actively remedying some situation that needs to be set right or creature that needs to be renewed or rescued in some way.

Self-pity is yet something differnt alltoghether. In our wonded human nature we have an excesive self-love, and like Gollum in the Hobbit, it’s all about “poor me! poor me! Weez lost our precious!!!”

Hope that helps a lil bit.

Pity is an emotion. Mercy is an act of the will. Both are valuable, but mercy as a counterpoint to deserved justice is more noble being an act of the will. Pray that we have both so as to fulfill our humanity before our God.

That is the definition of hell…

a place completely devoid of pity…

whoever enters beyond this point abandon all hope.

Love God. Mercy will naturally come of it.

I struggle with self-pity a lot. I am disabled and some times I get overwhelmed by my sufferings and sorrows, and do give in to this sinful attitude but usually when I realize that’s what is going on, I address it and get rid of it. But it is a sin and a fault I will probably have to struggle against till I die. Oh well. I’ve asked God to help me with it and He has, but I still need to work against it.

You’ve listed several of your faults. We all have them. Don’t expect to be perfected any time soon. We are all sinners. We admit this and as you grow in the spiritual life, you will find strategies of your own for conquering your faults and failings, but the struggle against sin will be yours all your life. That is what makes some Saints Saints. They simply didn’t give up. Beating yourself up because you are working against some sins and still fall for them isn’t helpful at all and can do you great harm. God loves you. Love yourself enough to cut you some slack. Be merciful to YOURSELF. Add some self-forgiveness to your list of things to do.
