Self-Rule?

Hello all,

I have a question that is specific to Orthodoxy and I wanted to ask it here because I know a lot of Orthodox posters frequent this forum. I came across a few Churches in Colorado that describe themselves as “Antiochiene Self-Rule Orthodox of America.” I had never heard of them before. I found a few things on their website intriguing. First, they are Western-rite. I think I had heard of this before, but is there a legitimate “western rite” in Orthodoxy? Also, they actually used the term “Mass” after their Divine Liturgy. I’ve seen this in Eastern Catholic parishes, but never in an Orthodox Church. They also have a St. Ignatius society. So, I guess my bottom line question is-are they truly Orthodox? Are they in communion with Antioch or any of Eastern Orthodoxy? Or, are they a schismatic Church with or without valid Sacraments?

I doubt it, while the Antiochan Church does have Western-Rite Churches, they are not a seperate branch.

As for the Western Rite, I don’t know if they would call the service “Mass”. That isn’t the official name but that doesn’t mean it affects common usage.

Well I would have to see the website to know for certain but it sounds like these are parishes of the Western Rite Vicariate of the Antiochian Archdiocese of North America. The Antiochian Archdiocese is an autonomous Church under the Patriarch of Antioch.

The Western Rite of the Antiochian Archdiocese is a group of parishes that use one of several “reconstructed” western liturgies. Some of them include a variation of the Anglican Book of Common prayer, know as the Liturgy of St Tikhon; a reconstructed Liturgy of St Gregory, a Sarum Liturgy and others.

In addition to the Antiochian Western Rite, there is also a Western Rite within the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Although looked on with suspicion by some in mainstream Orthodoxy they are in full communion with the rest of the Church.

Using the term “self-ruled” for the Antiochan Orthodox Church is a bit unusual, but yeah, they’re legitimate.

I’ve never noticed that before, I didn’t realize the North American Archdiocese had been granted autonomy. I had always thought they were an integral part of the autocephalos Antiochan Orthodox Church.

I think they have been autonomous for a while. They love touting the “self-ruled” thing. 😃 I guess the Antiochians are not that prevalent in Canada? It probably doesn’t come up too much in normal conversation anyway.

They aren’t to prevailent in the area I live anyway. I have no idea if the city I live in has an Antiochan Church. The last city I lived in had one really rundown Antiochan Church that looked very uninviting. I don’t think it even had a sign.
