This isn’t a serious proposition but it bothers me that I can’t come up with a logical explanation of why it’s wrong…

Let’s assume for a second, and I realize this isn’t a given but just for fun, let’s assume that I’m going to be a good Catholic person and go to Heaven when I die. If that were to happen, then I would be in eternity with God…

…and eternity is not limited by temporal restrictions like time and space…

…so my soul would exist in Heaven outside of the restrictions of time and space…

…and my soul would have always existed in Heaven including right now, as I am writing this.

So - again on the uncertain assumption that I’m going to Heaven - could I ask for saintly intercession for my prayers by praying to myself?

Very interesting thought, but I think it would be very presumptuous to do something like this. I also think it would be a very prideful thing to do.

I’m minded of something Bishop Sheen said, that when he got to heaven, he would be surprised at who he saw there, and who he didn’t see there, but he’d be the most surprised to find himself there.

I posted a very similar question in the philosophy forum this morning. I am curious to see answers.

I do think with this particular question it might be dangerous to think of yourself as being a saint, in that you would be making a judgment call if you prayed to yourself? Wouldn’t that be saying that you ‘knew’ you were going to heaven? Most Catholics are very wary of ever indicating that they ‘know’ they will go to heaven, but freely admit they hope to be going.

I think that it would be a huge sin of pride to pray to myself in my current spiritual unworthiness for Heaven. But what if I had just walked out the door of a good confession? Assuming that I would NOT make it to Heaven would be surrendering to the idea that I will sin again, and how could I possibly hope to “go and sin no more” if I was convinced that there was no hope of me staying clean?

No. You reside withing the bounds of TIME. You cannot, because you have not completed your earthly duties within time.

You have not been excused by God for your punishment for sin, more than likely. You still have the possibility open to you to choose hell.

Absolutely not. That’s an inspiration of the devil.

I am sure in my conscience that my question is wrong; my question to all of you - that my conscience has not revealed to me - asks for an explanation of why it is wrong. I live in a part of the United States that is only 4% Catholic and challenges to the Catholic teaching on our interaction with the saints are frequent. While no one has asked me this question specifically, if i can think of it, so can the 96%, and I don’t have an answer for it besides “I think that would be wrong.”

Labeling the question as “inspiration of the devil” is hurtful, untrue, and unnecessary to make your point.
