Is there a free resource on how to use Nfp? I need it for health purposes and obviously as a broke and single person, taking classes or buying books are not ideal atm šŸ˜ž

It pretty much is don’t do ā€œitā€ while the woman (wife) is fertile- a couple days a month. Google searches for official medical websites can specify the science and how to track. There are also apps that can help track (never married, so I don’t know if they are good or not lol) as well as tests you can get at drug stores to use for some months to find out exactly when. I do also believe some catholic websites offer advice and some parishes have people to explain. Hope this helps! Just wait until you’re married girl šŸ™‚

BIllings can be learned. They had an online charting system. They also had an online instruction service.

The charting I remember being no cost. There might have been a fee for the instructor.

If you’re just using it to track health, it should be sufficient. Some users don’t find it as reliable as they would like.

Also, iPhones have the built in health app There’s a choice for reproductive health, under that are links to other more specific apps.

You can probably find a cheap copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility, which is very good and will give you a couple pointers for health. It’s been around a long time, so I’m sure used copies are available on a used books site (I’d send you mine, but…I still use it, ha!)

Fertilityfriend.org is also free.

There are reasons for this like further diagnosis of hormonal problems. I had to track myself for health reasons.

Thank you, I was digging a hole for myself after wrongly concluding it was for sex outside marriage

You have free ressources, chart and book here:

http://www.nfpandmore.org/

As you are searching for health information, there are informations here (even if no free book, or course), Creighton and napro technology:
https://www.creightonmodel.com/index.html
https://www.naprotechnology.com/copyright.htm

It’s better to define what you want sign you want to chart: mucus, cervix, Basal Body temperature, LH?
And for what reason? determinating ovulation? The lenght or deficiency of luteal phase? PMS syndrome?..

The answers will directed you toward a method.

To remerber,
  • there are mucus-only method/ Billings, Creighton
  • There are multi-symptoms method: sympto thermal methods
  • there are a method which combined hormonal tests with other signs: Marquette.
There are other app, websites, and ovulation calculators, but they are not always very effective and scientistic enough for a use of NFP.

The best way to learn NFP is with an instructor. Most I know offer a sliding scale according to ability to pay.

You can ā€œself teachā€ with books. If you can’t buy them then get them through the library.

If you are not married sex is a sin… Just seen your comment so if NFP is not for sex then what is it for?
There are a TON of reasons to learn NFP while Chaste. Knowing about a cycle can be incredibly helpful with other medical problems.

OP: I’m just thinking off the cuff here but the FDA just approved ā€œNatural Cyclesā€ App as ā€œBirth Controlā€ If you are in the US that is probably now covered at 100 percent through insurance.

I am a nurse practitioner. I use a very resourceful evidence based site, UpToDate. Health professionals have access, too expensive to be a member outright. The information could be a little complex to read but all topics offer a basic format we offer clients/patients. NFP is covered very well through this site. Your GYN specialist should have access to this information and site. Ok, people, who are uncomfortable with sexuality, need to leave now, but if you’re not, read on.
Best time to learn when your most fertile is when your not having sex. Yes, get to know your cycle and your body’s physical indicators on when u are ovulating. Over the counter ovulation kits are very reliable and cost effective. They can help u determine and better inform you that your body is changing and getting ready to ovulate. It takes several months to master the method. By the time you’ll need it, you’ll be a pro!! 😊

I’ve looked through these links and I can’t seem to find any instructions

I’ve used creighton. It has to be taught by an instructor, on a one to one basis. They don’t publish instructions on line purposefully.

The UK Government has said this week said that Natural Cycles cannot be marketed as an aid to contraception in Britain as it is too unreliable.

@Lea101,

For systematic NFP symptothermal method:
If I don’t make a mistake, you can download the book for free here, if you registered.
http://www.nfpandmore.org/nfphowto.shtml

You can bring a blank chart here:

(note: there are many different symptothermal methods).

For Creighton, the course are only offer with a professional paid instructor. Sorry.
But what i want to indicate you, is that you can look at the Pope Paul VI institute website for informations on fertility and medical problems. As you said you want to known your fertility for medical reasons.
Dc Hildgers is a regular guest on Catholic Answers radio too.

Billings Ovulation Method offer course for free with a voluntered instructor or couple.

@Gilly_flower,
Natural Cycles are a calculo-thermal method. So it is not completely an NFP based-evidence method, as it involved some rythm (versus observation) for the latence phase of infertiliy. On the contrary BBT is a very reliable sign to determine luteal infertility only.
More, in their website, the creators of the method do not display any precise information of how their ā€œalgorythmā€ works and what informatios are taken in consideration.
Then, this app is not personalized.
As a conclusion, it can be a less-effective method, even if their self-claimed Pearl-index is very high.

To note, there was a controversy in Europe after a Sweden hospital claimed the app is responsible of 37 abortions in a short spam of time. As you know. But we don’t have any informations on how the people used the app, and it is highly probable that most used contraceptive versus abstinence in fertile period. Like the business encouraged it.

It is not seen well too in France, by NFP advocates, for reasons above, but also gynecologists (but for not the good reasons. They said it cannot worked, and rythm method is sufficient and cost-free).

Sure but if the OP is in the US and is looking for a free NFP source this may be covered at 100 percent. I’m not sure about that though. It would be something to look into.

The key here is if your cycle is very regular and monthly. If you are not regular than they don’t work e.g people with PCOS. But if you’re regular and your spouse is respectful on not breaking the rules, than it is mid 80% effective.

Surely the problem with any system which seeks to identify the fertile period is that many women simply don’t have a regular and predictable pattern - and even if they ā€œnormallyā€ do, other factors can cause irregularities from time to time.

When it comes to contraception one size most definitely does not fit all, and sadly ā€œnaturalā€ methods seem to be at their least reliable at those times when it is most important they work, such as post birth and during nursing, and when a woman is approaching menopause.

And the burden of a contraceptive ā€œfailā€ falls most heavily on those who can least afford an ā€œaccidentā€. If you are wealthy, and can afford extra household help, an unexpected child can be welcomed and provided for.

For a struggling couple on the breadline, it could be crippling burden…
