Ok, so I collect little plastic horses (My Little Ponies). And every year there is a big collector’s convention. It’s always on a weekend. I’ve been wanting to go for a long time, but it’s always been too far away for me to get to. But I just heard that next year’s convention will be near me, and I’m planning to go.

But now my mother is saying that I shouldn’t sell any of my ponies on Sunday, because you can’t do business on Sundays. Is selling stuff at a convention on Sundays a sin??? And how about buying ponies?? :confused:
Tif =8-)

I hope that your question doesn’t get lost in the process. I would like to see what others answer.

By “always on a weekend” do you mean both Saturday and Sunday, or just Sunday only?

If it is both Saturday and Sunday, could you just go Saturday only?

Is going on a Sunday conducive to keeping the 3rd and 4th commandments? (Remember thou Keep Holy the Sabbath, and Honor thy mother and thy father.)

While there on a Sunday (or even Saturday) is there a possibility of breaking the 10th commandment? (Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.)

In my opinion you could go Saturday only as a sacrifice to offer up to the Lord. True you might not be able to sell everything you want to sell or trade everything you want to trade but if you go Saturday and skip going on Sunday, you are showing respect to God, and your mother and you are avoiding the possibility of committing a sin. Remember it is just as important to avoid near occasions of sin as well as sin itself…

Finally Canon 1247 of the Code of Canon Law states:
Can. 1247 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass.
Moreover, they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body.
Go to church on Sunday and spend time with your family.

In my opinion, no this is not sinful.

Consult with your priest.

Ok, let’s see.

-yes, by weekend, I do mean Saturday and Sunday. And by “close”, I actually mean “only 3 states away”, so this will be a trip and we’ll be staying in a hotel.

-I do, of course, plan on attending mass, even if I have to miss some of the convention.

And there is more to the convention than just buying and selling, there is socializing and classes, speakers and games, etc., etc. I don’t know when exactly most of the selling will take place, I just wondered if there was anything wrong with this kind of thing on a Sunday…?

The only sin I see is possible disobedience to your mother. Things like this convention are more in the line of recreation than business for someone like yourself. As far as those who are there for business, the convention is held on the weekend because during the week few would show up.
