my girlfriend is considering selling a egg to a family that is infertile but there is a payment for the egg involved? is this against catholic teaching?

We are not talking chicken eggs here.

Yes, it is against Catholic teaching, on many levels. If you need resources please let me know. I don’t want to go digging for all the documentation if you don’t need it.

Some of the areas it violates are: selling body parts is prohibited, if the egg is to be used for IVF or another type of insemination purpose, it violates all sorts of teachings there.

Are you needing help in talking her out of it? Is she Catholic? Does she submit to any authority outside of herself?

Welcome to CAF. 👋 I hope your time here is fruitful.

This egg carries her genes and is her own precious responsibility, any child resulting from it is half hers, so essentially she’d be selling her own child.

Yes, definitely against Catholic teaching, and it’s easy to understand why, with all the potential complications:
  1. I assume that we’re discussing some sort of in vitro fertilization, as “natural” fertilization would definitely be immoral.
    Strike one.
  2. The process usually involves hormonally stimulating the donor’s ovaries to produce multiple ovulations, and multiple eggs are fertilized. What happens to the rest that are not implanted? Disposal or freezing and eventual disposal. Killing an embryo is the same as aborting a near-term fetus. Strike two.
  3. As has been said, it would be her child. Is she ready to give up her own child to anothe couple? Strike three.
Bad idea. Better idea all around for that couple to consider adoption. There are lots of babies and older children there that go begging for loving parents.

It is immoral to sell your eggs to someone, and it is also immoral to give them to someone without payment. Any type of procedure that attempts to create a child outside of natural intercourse between husband and wife is immoral.
