Is it sinful to sell your blood or kidney, as opposed to donating them? Should it be legal to do so, considering that there is a severe shortage of medical supplies for people who are in need of them?

I believe its illegal to do so in the US, if true then yes it would be a sin to sell your organs. To give a kidney to someone who needs it is a differant story of course.

My question is if it’s inherently sinful, or only sinful because it’s against the law.

It ultimately depends on your intent and situation. Are you selling your gall bladder to a research company, or plasma to a bank? Those are not destructive and do not hold a high risk. Are you selling part of your liver or other kidney, those hold high risk and it depends on your intent of why you are selling them.

My understanding is that it is not illegal, however not ethical and altruistic. If one sold an organ, for example a kidney, it may be difficult to find a transplant center and surgeon who would agree to perform the transplant.
