I know that you are not supposed to throw away or sell items that are blessed because they are sacramentals. But how could I explain this to someone who is Protestant? How could I explain this to someone who does not understand the Catholic Church? This is a pretty random question I know. But I am asking this for a good reason.

Simply tell them it is disrespectful in the views of your faith to throw away such items, and ask them to please respect that. You do not have to justify it to them.

It is okay to sell the blessed item but the blessing will not transfer. The buyer will have to get the item re-blessed. Old rosaries and statues and such are routinely sold at estate sales, church thrift stores etc.
