Semi-minorities trying to claim full status to get advantages

Many if not most people in America are of mixed heritage or race somewhere along the line. I don’t see a problem with claiming any or all of your parts, My father’s father was adopted so we have limited information on racial makeup. I always tell people that when applying for scholarships, fellowships etc to cast a wide net, within honesty of course. There are opportunities for just about every race, creed, religion, social club, extra curricular, or organization, if someone is trying to better themselves I don’t see why they shouldn’t have access to all of their options.

:rolleyes: We get it, you don’t like Obama and everything about him is wrong. But this thread isn’t about that, so out of respect for the OP please don’t derail it.
 
Actually, Obama is a good example of someone with a mixed racial identity.

Since African features tend to genetically be dominant, rather than recessive, then half Black offspring are perceived by the casual observer to be “Black”. And, remember, Obama grew up in a time when Black/White relationships were considered rather shocking.

In the case of my daughter’s friend, she does not “look” like a typical Hispanic, nor strongly identify, but made it clear that she is marking it off just to get whatever benefits might come her way.

One of the arguments against affirmative action is that, privileged Black and Hispanic youth take advantage of these preferences that are merely based on racial/ethnic groupings rather than true need.

Shocking.

Not what she’s doing. It’s shocking that US gov’t considers such information to be relevant at all and includes it on forms.

Where I live, it’s actually illegal for anyone (including the government) to ask you about your ethnicity.
 
The choice of which box she checks is her’s alone. It really shouldn’t be up for debate here, unless she’s lying about it for personal gain. Plus, there are no guarantees that minorities receive special treatment because of the box checked.
