We have a free weekend at the seminary coming up so instead of attending mass here I believe I will goto a Tridentine mass just down the street. While I love the new order of the mass I feel it will be important to learn the tridentine rite at some point and I am just wondering if I need to bring anything? I don’t have a missal or any money for that matter, is there usually some there? Is there anything else I should know to make sure I participate properly? I started by watching one on youtube.

Usually there are red ecclesia dei booklets or other missalletes with at least the order (somtimes the propers are included). Worst comes to worst, sit near the back and do as the Romans do 😃

Try not to sit so close that you can’t immitate the posture of the other parishioners, and try not to sit so far back that you can’t hear the priest properly.

During the Creed, everyone genuflects at the words “Et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Vigine: et homo factus est.”, which means “And He became flesh by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary: and was made man.”. Make sure to remain “genuflected” until the priest and everyone else rises from the genuflection. I was confused the first time I attended, believing it to be a quick genuflection like you do when entering a pew. This caused me to pop up and down like a gopher when I realized I had made a mistake; don’t do that. 😛

I commend you, tenfoot. The one bit of advice I’d have is to learn what you can about the Ordinary (unchanging) part of the Mass, so you’ll understand the differences better. Text online here:

Others are providing such good advise I can only add that I agree. We’ve gone for three weeks consecutive and we sit about halfway back in the Church so we can learn from others. In addition we have an old missal (1943) which we use. The church also has booklets available at the back of church for use.

I’m sure you will be impressed by the TLM. Please do come back and let us know what you think.

James

You might want to find a copy of the order of Mass- and the propers online and print them off. It is easy to get lost during a Traditional Latin Mass if it is new to you.

Be extremely careful. Though matters have changed with the Pope’s M.P. you must make sure that your Extraordinary Form attendance is not interpreted as a rejection of Vatican II. A lot of priests are very unsure about how to deal with the new regime, and what it means for their own ministry, and you must be sensitive to that.

Malcolm,
I do not wish to “hijack” the thread, but could you expound on this a bit?
How could his desire to visit an EF mass be a problem?
Who’s interpretation of his actions should he be concerned with?

I just sounds to me that this dedicated young man is wanting to prepare himself to minister as fully as possible to those who will be under his care.

James

Tenfootpole,

Malcolm’s post got me thinking. Please don’t think me too forward but:
What is the impression among the administration and seminarians at your seminary about the Moto-Proprio on the TLM?

If you don’t wish to answer I will understand - disapointed, but understanding.

James

I am sure there is a Old Missal lying around the seminary somewhere…
