I know this might seem like a lame question, but I really do have a good reason for asking it. What are the finances of a second-year seminarian like? A guy from our parish decided to study for the priesthood, and we’re trying to figure out how best to help him. Is money likely to be a need? If not, what else can we do to show our support? Thanks.

Yes, they need money!!!
What my family did in the past was to offer a small stipend just for pocket money and/or books, and when we would visit with him we would buy clothing or the basic things that he needed. He was quite shy and he did not like to ask for things. The big present was a laptop computer and a printer for his studies.

If he’s in Second Theology, he probably recieves a stipend from his diocese which he uses for gas and personal items. That being said, he is expected to use his car to drive back and forth to the diocese for certain events and, as part of his seminary training, to do pastoral care (hospitals, nursing homes, etc.), so that stipend doesn’t go very far.

I know of one parish that collects gas cards to send to our seminarians and cash is always appreciated.

He’s not in Second Theology - it’s his second year of college. He’s in his mid 30’s, and the place he had worked didn’t require college education, so this is all new for him.

SInce he’s in his second year of college, he’s probably not receiving a stipend; I know ours don’t. So money would definitly help him since he’s footing the bill for his education and living expenses.
