I’m 17, and I’ve been discerning a vocation to the Holy Priesthood. I’m a convert to the faith from Protestantism (currently in RCIA). Anyways, I heard at different times about seminaries from High School kids. If this is so, I am all for it. I’m in my junior year this year, and I eagerly want to serve the Church.

However, I wish to be a diocesan priest. The High School seminaries I heard about were for Religious Order priests. Does anyone know of high school seminaries for the Diocesan Priesthood? I would greatly appreciate it.

There are very few left. They just shut down Quigley’s in Chicago…😦

If you’re a junior in high school, then it would probably be best to start looking at college level seminaries, actually. There are more of those around and you might well be able to study at one while discerning a diocesan vocation. Plus, it’s not an easy task to transfer to another high school just for your senior year.

That makes sense. It probably would be difficult with it being the last year, but if it comes down to it, I’d be willing to do it. Is there a way you could point me in the direction of college level seminaries? Preferably on the East Coast? I would appreciate it very much.

Try Ave Maria University in Florida. They are not just a seminary but they have a special program for those in discernment.

begin with your diocesan director of vocations, he is your contact for the info you are looking for. for one thing, recent converts, even if they are older, will probably not be accepted into a seminary program for at least a couple of years to make sure their conversion is secure and lasting, and that they are not making that decision as a “honeymoon” kind of thing, but that they are discerning a real vocation. You will probably be counselled on what the prereqs are for a college seminary or pre-theologate program at a Catholic college like Ave Maria, Steubenville etc. so you can make sure your HS grades and background are good. you will also at some point be assigned a spiritual director to help with your progress and discernment. good luck, welcome home, and we will all be praying for you.

I’ve actually looked into it, and I’m having them send me some information in the mail. Hopefully I’ll be able to visit the campus sometime soon. Pictures on their website show the campus as being completely amazing.

I realized as well, that being a convert, it’s very likely I won’t be accepted right away. If that’s the case, I can accept that.

Our archdiocese has a “minor seminary” for grades 8 - 12.

Here you go, exactly everything you mentioned you are seeking:

cathedralprepseminary.com/

Although it is in the Diocese of Brooklyn, you need not be studying for that Diocese. I know a number of the staff there and it is an excellent school!

Let us know how it goes! 😃

Realize that high school seminaries are basically preparatory institutions getting you ready for the collegiate and major level seminaries, anyway. So it isn’t like you would be losing out on all that much at this point. The difficulties of transition might outweigh the benefits of seminary life. That said, there’s one in Brooklyn which I think is diocesan.

Well, there are a couple of ways to approach this. If you are considering diocesan priesthood, then ideally you would study for your native diocese of residence. If you get in touch with your diocesan vocations office, they can direct you and let you know what is the typical route for young people from the diocese.

The other thing would be to take a look at some college seminary programs which exist and contact their recuitment offices for information. I’m not particularly familiar with East Coast College Seminary programs, but this site of links might help:

consortium.villanova.edu/statements/seminaries.htm

Also, some seminaries accept candidates at a college level to the major seminary for philosophical studies. But that process would be via diocesan sponsorship.

Hah, come do teh pre-theologate program with me at Franciscan University of Steubenville
haha
(franciscan.edu)

Grace of God be with you!

p.s. im so happy no one has shot down his idea, pretty wise people here ,i love it!

The Pre-Theologate program at both Ave Maria and Franciscan have really impressed me. It allows you to really discern if God wants you to enter the priesthood or go onto seminary. I am going to Ave Maria University personally but Franciscan has a very very similar program and the two are kind of like sister schools. The Pre-Theologate all live in the same dorm and participate in community activities which is a plus. Also living with people who are also going through the same thing you are is wonderful help.

I plan on going to Ave Maria University in '08. The University looks amazing. It seems that the class sizes are fairly small, which sounds good to me!👍 Perhaps I’ll see you there.

I’ll be there in the fall of '07 so hopefully I will see you there 😃 . If you get a chance try and go to the Open House they have. I wasn’t really interested in Ave Maria until I went to the campus and realized how active and Catholic the College was. Coming from public schools, I had never experienced anything like it. Good luck on your admissions in the future. I will keep your discernment in my prayers and please keep my discernment in your prayers.
