Seminaries with individual rooms

I am extremely uncomfortable with sharing a room with somebody else. Are there any seminaries in the U.S. that have an individual room for each student?

I don’t know, but if you have a vocation to the priesthood, I’m sure God will take care of your worries. Maybe there’s a good reason for guys to share a room in seminary? —KCT

I know the Institute of Christ the King’s Seminary has individual rooms. But on a Diocese level, I know Dallas does because they don’t have enough seminarians. They told me they would double up if they had the numbers, but that’s not the case right now.

A friend of mine does not like to share rooms. He said he did the first few years in college, but not after that. So I can see that it does bother some people. Personally I do not care one way or the other.

I have heard of traditionalist Societies of Apostolic Life having to double up. Mind you, that’s third-hand… why not ask directly?

If it’s worth anything, though, I normally hate sharing. I just find it soooo hard to get to sleep being able to hear someone else breathe, and snore, etc.

Our seminary has single rooms and always has. An old priest I know told us that when he was in the seminary 60 years ago, to have another seminarian alone with you in your room was grounds for major disiplinary action, so doubling up was a major no-no. Besides, I have stayed in one of the rooms (while on a retreat in another wing) and they are barely big enough for one bed…but each does have its own bathroom and shower.

Out here in Spokane we have single rooms, but we are a college seminary.

But I have never heard of any seminary anywhere having shared rooms, but I suppose I AM on the west coast and many seminaries out here have at one (thankfully no longer, so far as I know) time had “issues” that would preclude putting men in shared rooms, if you take my meaning.

Good points! It’s like in a monastery, you are not allowed others in your cell.

We all had our own rooms at the seminary I went to…

But why put the cart before the horse? Before worrying about such, seems like going through the discernment process is the first concearn. Occupancy seems, in a fashion, tangenital…

It is my understanding that seminaries are not allowed to have more than one student in a room.

At St. Joseph’s (or St. Ben’s, for those who have been there) in Louisiana, there is only one student per room. I’m pretty certain that this is the norm at any seminaries, barring any unusual circumstances. For example, after Hurricane Katrina, seminarians from Notre Dame in New Orleans came over and stayed on the campus at St. Joseph and I think in a few instances had to double up.

But, baring any unusual situations, I’m pretty sure that seminaries are supposed to give each student his own room. Don’t expect your own shower, sink, etc., though

All seminaries here have single rooms (but not with an own bathroom!), but I have heard that the seminary of the neokatechumenen has shared rooms, but this is also third-hand, may have never been true or might be outdated.
