Just generally, what would you say: If somebody writes on a postcard something like “send some money for Christmas!”, and you feel he or she is expecting too much and thinks you are richer than you are, is it ok to explain that, maybe just send a small amount even though he or she might “expect” more… or what would be the Christian thing to do?

I’ve often helped out friends when they were in need, don’t get me wrong, including that guy, who is a very sweet person… but that’s something different… Kathrin

Um, Kathrin, you are under NO obligation to send someone money just because they write “send me some money” on a postcard, Christmastime or not!

You don’t owe them any money. You don’t owe them an explanation. You don’t owe them anything.

It is rude to actually ASK someone for money for Christmas, let alone to ask for an AMOUNT.

You need to IGNORE this person, not send him money. He is likely taking advantage of your kind nature and your tendency to scrupulosity.

The Christian thing to do is to pray for this person.

they are rude, and giving them anything will reward rudeness.

why would you think you have to give them money?
if they were honestly in need, they could approach you with WHY, and you coudl decide to give, or not… but they havent even said they are in need. just “i want cash”

pray for them, they are in grave danger if this is al they think of

If you send money it is quite likely that the same request will be made repeatedly.
I would think it inappropriate to ask someone for money.
You might do best to treat it as a joke the person has made, and give a joking response. It may well be a light-hearted joke anyway.

Did you ask them for a Christmas list? Maybe this was them telling you that if you were planning on getting them anything to just send money instead.

Or maybe they were joking. .

Or maybe they were being rude.

You know them best. If you are concerned, give them a call and ask if everything is ok with them. If you find they are struggling financially, going to loose the house, something like that. You can make decisions on if and how you choose to help them. But remember help doesn’t always have to come in form of money… 👍

He does come a poor family as far as I know, and no he didn’t ask for a specific amount, I just thought maybe he expected too much or think I am rich because I have helped him out before.
Maybe he was joking though, yes.
But maybe he thinks I am richer than I am because I have helped him before. And maybe he isn’t aware that I may have other friends who are in need.
Maybe I should just write him a letter and tell him a little bit more about myself, maybe he’ll write me back with some mroe info on his own situation.
🙂

In the Bible Jesus says to give to anyone who asks… but then His apostles also give healing and NOT money to the blind beggar… so it’s all not so black and white…

Thanks…

Kathrin

In the Bible Jesus says to give to anyone who asks…
He does not mean LITERALLY everyone who asks.

You have a kind nature, and you tend towards scrupulosity, so discuss it with your priest before you give sums of money to people who ask you.

So you really don’t know this person? This was just somone that you gave money to in the past for something? Christmas maybe?

It’s kind of odd that someone you don’t know would just come out and ask for money. Sounds a bit like begging. Just proceed with caution. Sometimes begging is all someone has left. Other times they are just trying to take advantage.

No, no, I do know him, I consider him a friend, but I do not know him very closely.
We met, chatted, had coffee… I think twice he asked me for some help. We’re not talking about huge sums.
He is very funny and sweet.
But the thing on the postcard just seemed a bit odd to me…

The only thing you should give this guy is a nice smile when you say goodbye.

I would pray about it, then makes the decision that brings you the most peace. What would you do if Jesus was with you? If you let God guide you, then you have absolutely no reason to feel any guilt or anxiety.

(And to insert my own opinion, I think that the post card was tacky and inappropriate. That shouldn’t stop you from praying about it though!)

The postcard itself was nice, and we have written each other cards before.
Just that remark at the end was maybe a bit… insensible?

He likely didn’t think too much of it though…

Kathrin, use your brain. A man should not be asking a woman for money.

I hope you are not implying that it is wrong simply because he is a man and Kathrin is a woman. After all, didn’t Jesus ask the Samaritan woman for water? It may be that he shouldn’t be given money, but not for that reason.

Yeah, it think it is wrong. I’m an old fashioned kind of girl. I don’t think a man should be asking a woman for money.
