I am a recent graduate of Engineering, a telecom Engineer.
I have been considering embacking on the journey towards priesthood since 2002.

But it has been so difficult taking that decission when I think of my parents that are looking forward to me to take up the responsibilities off them after my graduation.

They managed to train me as an Engineer so that I can help to carry the family along.

But that notwithstanding, I have this drive, passion to fulfil the promise I made to God about 5 - 6 years ago. Promised God that I will give my self totally to Him as a priest in a Celibate living as a restitution for my teenage mistakes

This is why I need help, guidance and prayers because I don’t know for now how to start.

First, get a good, solid, orthodox spiritual director.

I’m thinking–and this is just me–that if you made such a promise to God without the guidance of a spiritual director, it may not be valid.

Mass, adoration, rosary, prayers to the Holy Ghost for guidance, and don’t forget your Guardian Angel.

HTH.

I agree with all this:

Further, don’t go thinking that it might not be part of God’s plan for you to have studied in that field. It may be that you are called in a special way to use that degree in the service of Jesus Christ.

Attend and serve at Mass daily if possible. I think that is very important.

Hey there. I made a solemn oath to dedicate my life to God as a priest in 1987, immediately I had a vision of a woman …my wife…before I even met her. I was in Germany at the time station in Babenhausen. I said promised to become a priest and ultimately ran into my now wife inadvertently throught one of my soldiers. Married illicitly thinking I was doing it the right way back home. I tried to run away from this girl because I remembrered my promise. Her daddy was a bishop in another faith of course. He convinced me I’d go to hell if I didn’t convert to the one true church. My priests were fairly lame in my experience…long story short. I had another vision telling me to marry her. I didn’t understand it at first because she was not Catholic. Long long story short. We both discovered the early church fathers, the didache and lots of historical data that pointed to the one holy and apostolic church.

I think my promise was well meaning, but God sent me on another path. I still feel called and probably would have become a priest had my support system be more stable. We are now trying to foster vocations within our own domestic church. Our priest started that on our second mass before I really decided to return. My oldest son said it would be cool and has been thinking about it ever since. I am considering the diaconate now.

BTW: Fr. Kyle in the Fort Worth Diocese used to be a Civil Engineer. I thing you need to seek a Spiritual Director and in spite of your parents you should seriously consider what God wants you to do. Now if you have financial responsibilities, I doubt that you’ll have them for long because I know what engineers make. I’m basically a civil engineering with a related degree looking at licensing. Our Engineers make really good money and if you’re single and devoted to preparing for the religious/priesthood you’ll find a way. God will open the doors for you. BUT you must walk through them. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. Don’t do this because you “primised” but because you truly feel called. If God is pricking your heart, trust me, I know, you’ll know. I know deep down in my heart that I really should have become a priest and because I neglected to continue in that direction I will always have the prick. I’m hoping that if allowed into diaconate formation and ordained I will finally feel whole. I love my wife and see us together in this life, but as much as I love her and the children, I love God even more and really would love to serve Him in the priestly vocation deep in helping others in the body of Christ. So don’t run if you’re being called, you’ll regret it. But don’t do it just because either. You must be called.

Peace. We always pray for vocation and you’re added to our list.

if you have family obligations you would probably not be allowed to enter a seminary until they are discharged, and if you had significant debt like student loans would most likely be expected to pay them off before entering as well. if you are discerning a vocation, the vocations director of your diocese is the one to guide you, answer such questions, and appoint a spiritual director to help you. we will of course be praying fervently for you

A second reading opened my eyes a bit more. It is true. If you have an obligation to take over the company for your parents like that you may not be allowed to enter the seminary. At least not until you can make other arrangments. However, have you talked to your parents? Is is possible to train someone else to take over? Your parents have taken it upon themselves to support you through the engineering and training program. Until they are free financially from dependence on their business getting permission may be difficult. However, nothing should keep you from persuing other vocations until you are free. I apologize for not reading more carefully.

There have been many Saints that have given up their inheretance after parents passed away. But if you really feel called you should at least bring it up to your parents. Remember that you can carry out your responsibilities in a company like a vocation. In fact, you should treat it as a vocation. Opus Dei may be something you can look into while you discern. So many options. Diaconate is another option that you can make some similar commitments. However, age requirements. I assume you are young in your 20’s still. You have lots of time. Give it to God. Let Him guide you. But don’t forget your responsibililties that others depend on. Families may bedepending upon your work.
