I am going to be on retreat we are trying fit something in.

Very good question. I think individual parishes need to be letting people know that Pope Francis has called for a day of prayer and fasting. Churches should have there doors open for people on the 7th.

Parishes and dioceses can’t do a whole lot to let their people know since this was only announced on Sunday, Sept. 1. The only folks we can reach are our internet visitors, FB subscribers, and daily mass goers. This one is up to us. If you’re on a social media outlet it’s your job to get the word out! Ask leaders if you can post notice in your adoration chapel. Talk to your friends about it. Etc.

My plans for the day include going to the adoration chapel and having only two small meatless meals.

Talk to the priest or priests at your church and get them to mention it to the congregation. This is NOT somebody’s suggestion, this is a directive from Pope Francis.

Seamus

Let us not get ahead of ourselves "directive " is to strong a word. I think we should encourage each other and spread the word. Here are his words from Vatican radio.
To this end, brothers and sisters, I have decided to proclaim for the whole Church on 7 September next, the vigil of the birth of Mary, Queen of Peace, a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and throughout the world, and I also invite each person, including our fellow Christians, followers of other religions and all men of good will, to participate, in whatever way they can, in this initiative.
On 7 September, in Saint Peter’s Square, here, from 19:00 until 24:00, we will gather in prayer and in a spirit of penance, invoking God’s great gift of peace upon the beloved nation of Syria and upon each situation of conflict and violence around the world. Humanity needs to see these gestures of peace and to hear words of hope and peace! I ask all the local churches, in addition to fasting, that they gather to pray for this intention.

As Mary_Ellen said, this wasn’t announced until after Mass on Sunday. How and when do you think the priests can mention it?

The congregation has gone home for the week.

My plans for my day didn’t change. I had already booked a hotel and have dated tickets for a day at a park. With a little more notice, I might have been able to change the day for our outing. 🤷

The Pope exhorts May a powerful cry for peace go up from every land!

Mary Queen of Peace pray for us.

Hail Mary full of grace.
the Lord is with thee
blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus
Holy Mary, Mother of God
pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen

Priests can mention it in their daily masses.
Yes, of course they can.

I don’t know what it is like at your parish, but at mine?

We have 5 Masses on Sunday. There are hundreds of people at each. (Our parish has 1,000 families + 2,000 university students. )

For daily Mass? For all 5 days that we have it? Grand total is maybe 150 different people.

Mentioning it at Mass just isn’t going to reach the congregation.

If we know we should respect it somehow, even if the Priest never said anything…

I am a little bit sick but I will pray and eat less.

It’s a bit of a dilemma for me because my children (teens and up) have been planning a party for that day for a while. I don’t like the idea of insisting they cancel the party but I am not happy with the idea of having a party on a day of prayer and fasting either.

My parish KoC have had a Mexican dinner planned for that night for quite awhile. I doubt it will be cancelled. However our priest will likely lead a prayer with the people who are there.

That’s my problem

We planned and paid for a weekend celebration for my son’s birthday. 🤷

There isn’t any way to get our money back. And we can’t afford to just write it off.

I’m one of the many who have an event scheduled for September 7th
that will involve some long-distance highway travel and a very long day.
As for praying, I will at least pray the Rosary, and
hopefully be able to make it to the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.
As for fasting, given health considerations,
I’m thinking of fasting from listening to music on the car radio
instead of fasting from food.
Long-distance highway travel, no music, silence, time for prayer.

All you can do is the best you can. Yes it was short notice but as you know, it seemed a few days ago that action in that area of the world was imminent.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone cancel any long term plans but you can pray and do what you can.

If you’re scheduled to work or have major prior commitments during the day of prayer and fasting, you can always make small sacrifices throughout the day and take breaks-timeouts to say short prayers. Everything helps.

My life can’t come to a halt but I’ll do what I can and what I can do has me a bit excited. A fast is a good thing and I’m looking forward to that. I thought I would set reminders in my calendar for the day for the Liturgy Of The Hours. I’ve recently discovered that and enjoy it greatly.

My wife is out of town tonight and tomorrow so I have to deal with my daughter but while she is at swim team practice, I can drop into the church and spend some time with god there.

Our diocese has planned prayer up at our seminary with exposition, rosary, readings, etc… Also a few parishes made some plans for prayer as well. Not sure which one I will attend.
