The mormons I have known do not like anyone to be aware of the mountain meadow “incident” and get extremely defensive if it’s brought up to them.

Bring it on. Let’s take the Gospel to the sect of Joseph Smith.

It’s time that those good people (and they are many) drop the scales from their eyes and realize the errors and evil that is Mormon teaching.

YUP. John D. Lee has been the scapegoat for this waaaaay too long. I’m glad that someone finally did this. Can’t wait to see it.

I used to think it was a impromptu lynch mob mentality that caused it–redneck Missourians mouthing off to Mormons–including some of them bragging they had been in Cathage and helped kill JSjr. But the more I read, it was just way too well planned–a military operation. Then in Richard Abane’s One Nation Under Gods I read that when Brigham Young visited the massacre grounds he ordered the rock pile memorial and placard dedicated to the victims torn down–which apparently said nothing about Mormon involement. Like Mark Twain, I was convinced the massacre was by his order.

Hi,
This is the first I have ever heard of this. Ill have to see it.

From what I could find about the movie it’s supposed to be about a renegade faction of Mormons who committed the massacre. I don’t think this film is anything to celebrate. No group should be judged by the actions of misguided members. Our own Church, both Catholic and Protestant, wouldn’t stand up to that kind of exposure either if we are supposed to assess the truth of what we teach by the actions of those who acted in opposition to those teachings.

And I think Brigham Young would want to take down the memorial in order to stop his faith community from being judged by this one incident, not necessarily because he ordered it. He may have ordered it, but there could be other motives for having it taken down other than complicity in the crime.

unfortunately this film appears to be “based” on actual events which is hollywood slang for a fictional “entertaining” version of something that happened rather than anything resembling history. This is a tough to story to deal with anyway since the coverup was pretty thorough and few facts are available. A study of Brigham Young as leader of the LDS church tells us that he was pretty much the de facto monarch of a theocracy in Utah. His own words show him to be ruthless and quite willing to ignore the law for his own revelations. I fear we may never know the truth about this issue.

You know what? NOTHING happened in the Utah Territory without the express consideration and approval of Brigham Young. We may never have documented evidence, but we have enough to know what the Mormons did and did not do under BY’s leadership.

Growing up in Utah Valley, I never ever heard about this massacre even though I was less than 200 miles from the site until I was grown. No one talked about it. If there were nothing to cover up then why the secrecy?

I have no doubt that Brigham Young knew and gave the order. Remember the Danites? Yup. Blood Atonement was real. I’ve read my ancestors journals and I believe that what they wrote was real.

Can someone fill me in on the story. I don’t know about this.

You will find a more acurate description of it here:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Meadows_Massacre

zerinus
If that article which you link is what is accurate, Zerinus, it sure points the finger at Mormon leadership (Young on down to Lee) for the massacre.

Dressed like indians? Sounds like a old trick dating from colonial timess

The exact numbers murdered are irrelevant. This is something that needs to be aired and discussed and calls for your sect’s apologies for the actions of its local leadership is required.

I think your extremly niave about B Young he was coniving and ruthless leader far closer to David Kouresh than a medevil Pope. Look everybody claims to know about the ills of Catholcism and the Mormons will cite all the ills of Catholcism of its proof of apostacy. Light needs to be shown on the darker side of Mormanism and there is a significant difference here no Pope ordered the massacre of innoncent pope during the Crusades but it appears B Young himself might have just done that here the very least heis right hand man Lee has the key role in the demise of his own people. And since B Young is akin the St Paul of the Mormon church and Lee would be his Barnababas as Peter was akin to Joseph Smith in early catholcism. Joseph Smith and B Young and Lee were the Mormon leaders of vast improtance the foundation stone of their religion now if it can be found out that these men were not holy but frauds (and I think it can be proven) then their calims of holier restablished church has no credence. THe catholic church foundation lies with its founder Jesus Christ and the apostles. The Mormon Church relises on the testimony of Joseph SMith and B Young and some angel named Moroni, millions have been deceived by thier lies and the light needs to be shown on the fallibility of the early Mormon apostles. The midevil popes have been the subject of debate by Mormons and other sects since their inception it is time we turnaround this game and let fair play take place. Mainstream America has given this religion a free pass for too long its time we expose their coverrups. The Moromon claim to be spotless and their leaders spotless unlike I apsotate popes and such so the burdern on proof on impeccability is theirs and I don’t think they can pass the test.

There was also a play titled “Two-Headed” a couple of years ago that told parts of the Mountain Meadows massacre story. One of the characters in Two-Headed was supposed to have been an eye witness.

Personally, I’m stoked. I can’t wait to see “September Dawn”.

And yes, I’m ex-LDS who still has a soft spot for those kooky Mormons 🙂

This movie will cause a stir I bet… but I think most church members of today didn’t know much about the Mormon Massacre until bones were found while excavating the site…( I dont remember the year). but the church leaders have known all along… It will be interesting to see how accurate this movie is…

exactly. That’ll be one movie I know I’m interested in seeing. As much as media wants to bash Catholicism or even just the “general” sense of Christianity, it’ll be interesting to see this movie and then do some research about the event.

Our own Church? Seeing how there is only one… I wouldn’t pluralize that. 😃 😃 😃 If you’re referring to the Catholic Church… heck, we take a beating at nearly every chance media and Hollyweird can take. As for Protestant… they don’t get beaten down as hard as we do.

This still sounds like a pretty good movie.
