Serbian Orthodox Question

I was just speaking with a friend and her husband was brought up Serbian Orthodox. His family actually only attended church during special events. She commented that after the service they have social events and that many times the parish would have fortune tellers or palm readers there to entertain the parishioners.

Has anyone ever heard of this being done in Orthodox parishes?

I find it strange as the Bible is against us seeing fortune tellers.

No, not to my knowledge.

I have never, ever encountered anything like that, even at parish carnivals, where I can imagine such things done at fund raising booths.

Maybe your friend is confusing his memories with town festivals and such

I don’t believe in it and do not approve, but I know a lot of people (I mean all kinds of people) do it for fun, and it seems to have been for many centuries. It seems to be culturally ingrained as a form of entertainment. I see people here in China that do palm readings.

I have read stories of some Popes, Cardinals and bishops in the past who have used astrologers. I never thought about it as anything but silly superstition, but I am curious about the Bible passages that forbid it, can you reference some for me?

It is very common for Orthodox to gather socially after liturgy. Usually it is for ‘coffee and cake’, except during Great Lent. One may think of it as an ‘Ice Cream Social’ and it is very effective for community building.

One must remember that the Eucharistic Fast is stringent (compared to most other churches demands) and the single liturgy is long, so many people have not had anything to eat for quite a few hours when liturgy ends around 11:30 or so.

I’ve also never come across this in an Orthodox Church. I know I wouldn’t be comfortable with it going on.

Going to Church only during special events for American (for example) is a shame shame, but for someone who has been or came out of a communist country, I say this is impressive. although it is not the way it should be, but considering the background, this is not bad at all.

In a Serbian Church, if that happened, I bit it did once, that is not to say I believe it when I see it, knowing the Serbian Church and their clergy as being one of the most pious Orthodox.

ummm yes, true…But don’t mind me saying this, you as a Catholic I think you should be looking at what goes on in your own church before you look at the Orthodox Church and Nope I am not talking about the pedophiles in the RCC, But shouldn’t you be questioning the Gambeling (BINGO) that it is organized and supervised by the RCC, Bingo is a Gamble and it is just as bad as the fortune tellers

I don’t think you can equate Bingo with trying to converse with the dead.

I am not sure that I can either but nor can you, however, Gambling (Bingo) is uncononical and it is forbiden in the Canon Law.

Maybe she did? I myself never heard of it,and as you noticed from all the Orthodox reply that it is very strange things for all of us to hear and this is the first time that I hear of such thing especially from a Serbian Church, those guys, almost 400 years under the turks and their Orthodoxy remained as true and as solid as anything could get, they pride themselves how good they kept their Church. Try to find out about their “SLAVA” what is that mean.
