I have been marriage for a little of 5 years to my wife(no kids), and against the advice of some I am still trying to make it work.

I have tried a lot, but I may be at the end of the line. There have been several severe things when I may have been able to justifiably leave my marriage, but I believe in exhausting all options first.

About 2 years ago, it became very clear that the root of anything that has happened was a communication issue. We tried marriage retreats, I read many books, etc.

The biggest issue is I am not permitted to speak about any personal feelings of mine. I can somethings talk about random events of my work day, (the only AC broke. the computers were down, etc), but if I say I was hurt by this coworker I am told to shut up. The then talks about her feels, and then says, I have no time for you.

We have both been in individual counseling and marriage counseling for over a year. Although the fights have became less heated. My wife still refuses to let me share my feels about us, my day, my week, our life. I will provide to scripts from a very recent Marriage Counseling session.

Me “Can I place on the calendar I time when I can share my feelings”
my wife “No, I am to busy, and have to much going on”
Me “This can even be next week, or after”
my wife “You ALEADY KNOW I am busy that week”
The MC “What about Saturdays?”
my wife “NO”
THE MC " What about this time, date, place"
me “No”
Me “Can I talk to you if right have you share your feeling with me tomorrow?”
Her “What you is problem you know I need to do this that and …”

We then talked about another topic and the Marriage counseling went back to communication feelings.

the MC “what about if you allow him to start even if you are busy with something else, it can be known that you may that remember or pay attention to much if anything he says. He need practice speak to you, even you tune him out, this will allow him to say what is important to him”
my wife “I am unable to do so”
the MC “what about only 5 minutes”
my wife “I do not think I can”

Again, marriage for 5 and half years, and this have been the last 5(it just even clear now because it is now in a structured counseling session. I can not say I have lied to my wife, but she really has no idea whom I am. I realize marriage is forever, but a marriage also includes communication.

Additional we have only been slightly intimate one time in the past 16 months. This is because she hit me(a few time before that point). I told her, there is no possibility of that happening again until, we can constructively talk about the hitting issue. She hit me again since marriage counseling has started 13 months ago, but has shared with me even 2-3 weeks ago in counseling “It was your fault I hit you”. It is hard to forgive and move on when the discussion has never been discussed.

I also asked during marriage counseling about Retrouvaille… My wife said if we attended she may not even allow my to speak during to times slated for me.

This is very bizarre behavior. There has to be something psychologically go on with your wife. Has she always been this way -even before marriage? You can not possibly bring children into this situation. Your wife seems to be narcissistic. What does the marriage counselor say? Have you talked about this with your priest? I will pray for you, it must be very difficult to live this way.

Will pray! I wish I had more advise but it doesn’t sound like she’s willing to change. Does she want the marriage to work?

There shouldn’t be any hitting going on. If she assaults you again, call the cops and press charges. Something is really wrong here.

Yes! I agree. It’s especially concerning to me that she shows no remorse. What does the counselor say about this?

bernadettefaith- The hitting… Surprisingly if it happened in the they really do not comment, it is know if it happens again cops, lawyers, etc will be involved be the fact it happen in the past mine have not provide (name removed by moderator)ut.

rayne89 - In the last couple months I found out she has mental diagnoses, we both were aware of this before we got marriage. She knows the details but has not shared them with me. I am really struggling with the “sickness and health thing” vs leaving, and if I leave the marriage what my role to her still may be to her.

bernadettefaith - She does want the marriage to work, in fact if I said I wanted a divorce I think she will be completely surprised and shocked.

I really feel for you. Mental issues are very tough, especially on a young marriage.

I suggest that you talk with a priest about how to handle this. I would also suggest asking him about annulment if this ends in divorce (NOTE: I’m not telling you to get one, but personally if it were me, I would discuss all my options with the priest).

Addtionally, are your wife’s parents still alive? Have you spoken to them? Or any close siblings?

Good luck and God bless.

Yes, if it comes to divorce discuss all your options with a priest. It is possible that these mental conditions were there at the time of marriage.

Prayers for the situation!

I have talked more than priest and know and have support for any options I choice.

Her parents are alive and she has a bother.

She considers her brother estranged to her and they only see each other once a year. She seems to no longer to have feelings for her young nieces and nephews.

Her parents are still alive, married, and good health, the only talk to her mom when absolutely necessary and dad not much more.

I once contacted her brother and he is confused, I contacted her dad and je only said she needs professional counseling but provided no support to me.

The hates my family and hopes I never speak to them again.

I believe I would be granted an annulment if I comes to divorce, but I would rather not know I could mostly get one because I feel like I would be cheating on my marriage.

I am someone that truly believes marriage is for life, the idea of getting a divorce is completely foreign to me. Until I entered my adult life I think I could count on my hands the number of people that I knew that were divorced, and everyone I knew that was married up to that point in my life is still married today.

I thank everyone that has offered a prayer. I have a plan, my family will support me and I am not afraid to share more with them. I have met many local people that I can find support in. One the other hand I feel bad because my wife and alienated from her family, and although they would support her, I do not thing she could go to them(her reasons, not theirs). She also has few if any friends. I have been told my priest, and counselors, not my problem, but I feel enormous guilt.

I’m not a psychologist, but it sounds like you’re wife may have a personality disorder. Try reading “Stop Waliking on Eggshells” by Paul Mason. It may be a light bulb moment.
