Seriously, Let's Talk About Trader Joe's

A TJ’s opened recently, first one in our state.

It is an hour away from me, so, not a regular weekly shopping spot but each time I am in that neighborhood I’m there.

Today I tried the sliced sourdough bread for the first time. I was blown away, it is exactly like my mom’s sourdough bread back in the day. Texture, tang, heavenly!

The 21 Seasoning Salute and the Umami Seasoning are now staples in our cooking. I love buying freezer food that tastes like food instead of over seasoned TV dinners.

Anyone else?

Trader Joe’s is one of my favorites. Really great stuff! I don’t live near one but my daughter does. I had a kidney stone removed about six weeks ago, and while I spent the day recovering, it was her job to bring me goodies from TJ’s.
 
We don’t have one near us, but we went there when visiting my daughter. They make an orzo pasta salad that is delicious! I love their selection of snacks and cookies and such. Wine is affordable too. You never leave without buying something that you “just have to try.” I do think some of their frozen items are crazy expensive, but they do have things I haven’t seen anywhere else.

I’ve only been in a TJs once, briefly, while visiting my cousin in CA. She was grabbing a few bags of some snacks (that were delicious) and I barely had time to really look around. I’m jealous of those that have access to one! heavy sigh…
 
I like many TJ products but don’t buy them often:
  • Cats Cookies, any flavor (these are cat-shaped cookies for people to eat)
  • Schoolbook Cookies (alphabet and numeral shaped)
  • Pound Plus dark chocolate bars
  • various trail mixes, nuts, dried berries and other dried fruits
  • various TJ breads, especially flourless
 
There isn’t one near any place I hang out. I might give it a try if it came near enough to me, but I’m not interested enough in pricey groceries to seek one out. I used to go to Whole Foods sometimes but they just didn’t have enough there that interested me for the amount of money they wanted me to pay.

I’m pretty much happy if a grocery is near me, cheap, open late, and has a decent grab n’ go deli. Salad bar is also a big plus.

TJs is not pricey. They are known for their low prices. Their beer prices are high, their toilet paper is high. The things I buy are at or below WalMart prices for higher quality food! Last week they had large pineapples for $2.99 each, bags of tangerines for $2.99. Way below WalMart for those items
 
The last one I was in was in DC, and it wasn’t cheap. Most people were shopping there for specialty items as well.

If one opens up around here ever, I’ll compare prices.
 
We have several within easy driving distance. I don’t do my weekly grocery shopping there, but I do go once a month or so for specialty items. My niece (who is also my goddaughter) works at one while she’s finishing college.
 
I’ve been there once. It’s a forty-minute drive one way. When one includes the fuel into the equation, it isn’t so inexpensive. They do have an excellent selection of vegetarian goods, though.
 
TJ’s frozen chicken tikka masala is excellent. Better than some restaurants. Two of them with just a dab of hot sauce makes a good meal.

Since I live in California, I’ve been a Trader Joe’s customer for years. TJ’s isn’t on my everyday shopping list but I have a few goto items I like.

Before I discovered “Sprouts” I used to buy my whole bean coffee there. TJ’s red enchilada sauce is wonderful. I buy my tea tree oil there and I love their liquid hand soap. Their frozen orange chicken is better than anything I’ve gotten from any other grocery store (although not as good as from a Chinese restaurant.) They have great snacks and chocolate goodies (especially around Christmas time.) And yes, the bread is usually pretty good.

At least around here, the TJ’s usually have a sample “station” where you get a tiny cup of coffee and some kind of snack. I make a point of trying most of what they have.
 
Darn! I’m always closer to Trader Joe’s on Thursday mornings as I attend “That Man is You” at our parish. TJ’s is only a few miles away, but it’s morning rush hour and would take 30+ minutes to get there. Still, I might hazard it one day to see what I can get since they open at 8AM. Now, if they opened at 4AM, I’d be there since I wake at 3-3:30 AM every morning!
