You may have seen my other post about my first time serving Low Mass…a couple weeks ago. Well today the parish had its first High Mass. Just beautiful, even though only a little over a dozen people attended. I understand Rome wasn’t built in a day. Pray for us.

I was the thurifer. My duties: I carried the censor; I held Father’s chasuble on the left side while he incensed the altar; I incensed the people and the Blessed Sacrament at the Consecration.

I’m 28, and the three other servers were older gents. They had served, as the one said, “generations ago”, so basically this was like learning all over again. Really, only the Master of Ceremonies --the server coordinator-- knew what to do the entire time. But he directed us wonderfully. We had a few bumps in the road, but nothing horrible. The biggest snag was dealing with the architecture of the sanctuary. There is a huge pillar on either side of the altar that kept getting in the way, making for tight squeezes when we were gathered there together.

The celebrant was not a priest from the parish. He’s a Benedictine from a local monastery. He is absolutely outstanding. Before processing in, we gathered round in the sacristy and he lead us in the Apostle’s Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and Regina Caeli…in Latin, of course. At the end of Mass, back in the sacristy, he gave us a blessing…in Latin, of course. We asked him to critique us, and he said everything was fine. During Mass, he directed us in a most charitable and humble manner when we looked lost.

Folks, I’m on a high right now that you wouldn’t believe. I can’t believe I have to wait a full 2 weeks for my next opportunity to serve High Mass.

If anyone is in the Cleveland area, and would like to know which parish this is, PM me. We need to fill up these pews.

Wonderful—👍

YAY! God bless you!

I understand absolutely how you feel (You and I are the same age, roughly). It’s quite amazing, isnt it?

Markadm,

Amazing doesn’t describe it. I was telling my mom that I didn’t know if I could go back to sitting in the congregation. I need to serve at that altar. Alleluia, baby! Wooooooooo! :extrahappy:

God :blessyou: too, Markadm.

BTW, I’m 29…typo.

Sniff…sniff…sniff…do I smell a vocation? 😃

Well, I can run it by my wife and see what she says. :tiphat:

Maybe my son, though.
Oops. Sorry for jumping to conclusions.

I heard a good bishop say, “If Dad is doing his duty in the family, there will be vocations.”

Sounds like your off to a good start! 👍

nice! i want to learn to serve at the EF Mass, just wish i had the time and commitment…

“thurifer” heh. i wonder how that would sound if you had a lisp…

That’s what I thought.

Magnum_V8: you may be married and with a son, but um… I am not. Not to sound too egotistical, but starting to serve at the Altar has confirmed some vocational thoughts and feelings for me.

aha! I knew my sniffer wasn’t going to deceive me completely! (kidding!)

As you peruse various materials from various sources, I strongly suggest you obtain and listen to this lecture of Bishop Williamson. Not to make a push for the SSPX, but for the sheer value of what he says in this interview.

Even if people disagree with their status or stance, most of those people want them regularized and “in the Church” so to speak because they are so well-formed and have such zeal. And Williamson is responsible for a good deal of that.

MagnumV8, our stories are remarkably similiar. I served my first Low Mass about a month ago, and served my first High Mass yesterday too. Deo Gratias that I have been given the immense privilege of serving at the Lord’s altar!

Good for you!

I’m sure the Almighty thanks you for your service at the altar. And we, Americans, thank you for your service to us.
