Is there any specific rule that defines what servers are to wear exactly? Such as I find eastern styled Cassocks quite cool (lol) and I don’t see why a latin rite Catholic couldn’t wear one with a surplice to serve Mass, unless of course there is a specific law that forbids the practice.
 
Most of the servers in my Diocese wear street clothes when serving, which I find very disrespectful, not so much on their part, but on the part of the liturgical director who insists on it.

Does the parish have the means to purchase albs? Perhaps this can be brought to the pastor’s attention, or to the parish council.
 
Female altar servers are basically cross dressing if they are wearing cassocks and surplices…Cassocks and Surplices are garb associated with clerics. And clerics are male.
 
I’ve often wondered, are there any official documents saying female altar servers cannot wear cassocks and surplices? I am not a huge fan of altar girls, but I am also not a fan of the tacky albs that you see everywhere, either. The fabric looks like it came from curtains in a seedy hotel room.

I know that our parish is tossing around the idea of having adult (male) altar servers in cassock and surplice for solemn occasions. I hope that goes through.

It reminds me more of burial clothes (like the ones you see on Jesus in crucifixion movies).

I’m not sure there is any rule on it, but traditionally, servers should wear cassocks and surplices. Albs are tacky- though I would rather girls wear those than cassocks and surplices.
 
Though they may vary in quality to be sure, albs are not intrinsically tacky.

The alb (aka white garment) is the liturgical vestment proper to all the baptized.

Not really, just like there are no official documents prohibiting male altar servers from wearing nun’s habits.

Other than, of course, the entry given “suitable and dignified”

It’s neither suitable or dignified for a boy to wear a nun’s habit or for a girl to wear a cassock.

This is true, the only garb available for altar servers is male clothing. There is no proper garb for female altar servers.

Albs are permitted in the United States, and that, unlike cassocks, is garb proper to all baptized persons.
