Serving in the Catholic church: A woman’s 'wonderful gifts’
When Mary Dumm first started working as a pastoral associate in the Catholic Church, parishioners would occasionally question her authority because she’s a woman.
“They didn’t understand I went to seminary,” said Dumm, 50, who earned a doctorate in ministry and is pastoral associate at St. Blase in Sterling Heights, one of metro Detroit’s larger parishes, with 2,200 to 2,500 families. “They didn’t understand I wasn’t a nun.”
But now, “those issues don’t matter anymore. … We work side-by-side with the guys.”
