Hello all, I got baptised at the Easter vigil this year and have been giving much thought on how I can best serve the church. I have offered my services as a joiner should anything become damaged in the church and our parish priest also suggested that I should also give some thought to serving the Church from a more spiritual perspective as well. He was in a rush and talking to a lot of people so didn’t go into detail - It’s his 25th anniversary of being ordained. So could you all if you can give me some more spiritual examples to consider on best how to serve the Church? Thank you very much and God bless!

Do you feel confident and comfortable enough to teach religious education to children in the parish?
 
It is good that you want to serve in the church. I am not sure what you can do though. I would add a word of caution - in our enthusiasm, it is easy to want to do something for the church. In reality, one can encounter lots of frustration in doing so - it is really not a bed of roses, the church is. One can easily get burn out and has bad experience.

I think you can help the church by being active in following whatever activities your parish have. That should even include the mass and so forth. You will begin to see a clearer picture and maybe decide where you’d fit in better.

I had the same questions when I came into the Church. I knew I needed to be doing something, just didn’t know what that something was. Finally, I peacefully accepted that I would just “be” for a while and rely on the Holy Spirit to direct. One of my Catechists was the first to ask me to help, and then several opportunities presented themselves. If you have a Bible Study, that’s a good place to start. Blessings.
 
Congratulations on joining the Church! How wonderful that you want to serve!

There are so many ways to be involved in serving at the Church. You can inquire at your parish office for ideas, but just a few that come to mind…
  • Ushers
  • Greeters
  • Choir
  • St. Vincent de Paul ministry (Food Pantry & more–great opportunity to help those in need)
  • Knights of Columbus (many of these groups perform needed jobs/repairs for women or those in need)
  • Lectors
  • Extraordinary Ministers
  • Cleaning ministry around the parish
  • Teaching children in Faith Formation
  • Teaching or helping with RCIA
  • Cooking/providing food for church events or cleaning up afterwards
  • Signing up to sit with Jesus during Adoration
  • Visiting the sick and lonely in hospitals/nursing homes/homebound
  • Providing transportation for the elderly/disabled to attend Mass & Confession
  • Committing to daily prayer/Rosary for the Church and your priest
  • Leading or participating in a weekly Rosary/Divine Mercy group
  • Leading or participating in weekly home Bible study

I would also add that your parish might also need volunteers to sit on the various parish committees. That also might be something to consider, if you have any talent that might fit for one of the committees. 🙂
 
Sitting beside someone new and helping them with learning “why we do what we do” during Mass. Finding their way in the hymnbook or missal especially if they aren’t Catholic or new to the country.

Helping with or organising the coffee/tea gathering after Mass.

Being a sponsor for someone being received or baptised into the Catholic Church. Let the person ask you to be their sponsor.

Sacristy. Laundry is very helpful.

Repairing broken items like chairs if you are skilled with that.

Gardening.
