I posted a prayer intention recently on behalf of a very sad and critical situation within the family, and someone recommended praying the Servite Rosary, meditating on the seven sorrows of our Blessed Mother. I’d never even heard of it! I found it online (Servite Rosary in Time of Pandemic – The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, The Grotto | Portland, Oregon), was surprisingly touched by the imagery, and found myself thinking of a “super novena” using this meditation. Nine cycles, nine times, 81 days – which, at the time, ended on Good Friday. Today was Day 4.

Am posting this here (rather than prayer intention forum) because it seems a devotion worth knowing about. Please feel free to move if inappropriately placed. Has anyone more information (beyond what is in Wikipedia) or had any experiences with the prayer? I feel like a stranger made a kind reference and a whole new world opened up for me just at a time someone dear needs it most.

Wow, I own a seven decade rosary, to pray the 7 joyous mysteries of the Franciscan Crown Rosary, but neither have I heard of the Servite a Rosary.

This seems to be the best forum for it–Prayer Intentions is not intended for discussion. It’d work for a perpetual chaplet prayer thread, though.

I went to thegrotto.org/about-us/servite-rosary/ just to see the devotion is what I know as the “Servite rosary.” It is. If anyone hasn’t gone to Wikipedia, this is the same devotion known as the “Chaplet [or ‘Rosary’] of the Seven Dolors [or ‘Seven Sorrows’].”

I’ve seen a few different variations concerning the beginning and perhaps the ending, but the heart is usually the same: seven sets of an Our Father followed by seven Hail Marys, each set dedicated to a particular sorrow, concluding with three additional Hail Marys, which are usually said to symbolize tears. Often versions begin with an act of contrition. The version at that link has other prayers at the beginning and ending.

And I’ve never seen a physical chaplet in person, but pictures show something that tends to look like a Dominican rosary with slightly more “Our Father” beads (6 instead of 4), with the “Hail Mary” beads in around the same number (49 instead of 50) but in slightly more groupings (7 instead of 5) of shorter “septades” (7 instead of 10) or whatever the name would be. In searching, I do find a lot of examples with what look like medals (possibly depicting the sorrows?) as “Our Father” beads.

I don’t have too much consistent experience with this prayer, but I hope to see others posting about their experiences.

I have the seven decade Franciscan Crown Roasary, which I pray daily. But I never heard of the Servite Roasary.
