What are they? Where did they “come from,” scripture-wise? And why are they called deadly?

Sloth, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Envy, Wrath, Pride.

They didn’t necessarily come from scripture. I think the biggest influence was Dante’s The Divine Comedy. These sins came about in, I think, sometime around the Middle Ages.

They are called “Deadly” because they lead you away from God. Pride is the deadliest.

Actually, wasn’t it Pope Gregory the Great the first person to codify the Seven Deadly Sins? It was a revison of a list by a 4th century monk named Evagrius Ponticus, who listed “eight evil thoughts” as follows.

Gluttony; fornication; avarice; sorrow; anger; discouragement; vainglory; pride.

Gregory reorganized these into the Seven Deadly Sins. Vainglory and pride were wrapped up in one and the others changed names to Envy and Sloth.

Dante came along later and with his Divine Comedy, influenced it to a greater degree.

Eventually the medieval scholars would attribute to each sin a demon lord who used the sin as his weapon. They were as follows.

Lucifer: pride
Mammon: greed
Asmodeus: lust
Leviathan: envy
Beelzebub: gluttony
Amon: wrath
Belphegor: sloth
