No government, kingdom or society lasts forever. Here are seven factors that contributed to ancient Rome’s demise—warning signs that exist today within the nations of the American and British peoples.

By Bruce A. Ritter

In an interview with the Financial Times, U.S. Comptroller General David Walker stated that the United States government “is on a ‘burning platform’ of unsustainable policies and practices with fiscal deficits, chronic healthcare underfunding, immigration, and overseas military commitments threatening a crisis if action is not taken soon…”

The article added, “Mr. Walker warned that there were ‘striking similarities’ between America’s current situation and the factors that brought down Rome, including ‘declining moral values and political civility at home, an over-confident and over-extended military in foreign lands and fiscal irresponsibility by central government.’”

I have trouble believing that well-funded public healthcare would have saved Rome.

I’ve often thought about parallels between Rome and the United States.

The take heart – Rome lasted about 1100 years from founding to “fall” and the East Roman Empire lasted almost another thousand years.

So we’ve got about 1800 years to go.😃

Except, we’re in the midst of our Caligula. 😉

No empire on this earth lasts forever, and neither will the United States. We have a lot of problems and mostly are hiding our heads in the sand when it comes to the sin that is rampant in our society. Rome fell simply because of decadent lifestyles, in my opinion.

Note that empires fall much faster today than they did 2000 years ago. A hundred years ago Turkey, Spain, England, France and Prussia were all great empires.

Perhaps if we could remove the Pacific coastal states and the northeastern states from our union then we’d eliminate much of that problem 🤷 Sometimes it is necessary to surgically extract a failing organ, or amputate a gangrenous limb to save the health of a person. Perhaps a political & geographical amputation would work?

Given the potential need for haste, as you illustrate with these examples, it might be necessary to take rash action to save the US from itself.

Huh? Our Caligula came up in Texas (at least he pretends to be Texan), not the Pacific Coast or the Northeast. I would daresay that cutting off the west coast and the northesat (which, IMO would irreparably damage the US economically) would also be cutting off some of the brain trust and economic power that keeps the rest of the country afloat.

??? Please elucidate.

Certainly we have a problem with the leader, he’s worse even than his dad and that didn’t seem possible. But the brain trust of the west coast is less of a brain trust and more of a societal cancer. Caligula indulged in sin. The whole of the west coast, combined with the northeast, are hyper self indulgent sub-cultures that are influencing the whole middle of America and providing us with such cultural benefits as TV shows like RAD GIRLS and spoon feeding us the details of Brittany Spears meltdown. These are the role models that our young girls are looking to, and our young boys have similar fine role models. The brain trust is funding much of the gender neutralizing policy that boosts the legitimacy of abortion, free sex, gay marriage, etc. Yup, cutting off limbs like those might cause some pain, but might also save society.

No, he went out of office in 2001. But Nero is poised to take over in 2009.😃
Here’s the difference betwixt thee and me.

I can see that some Republicans have done some good. I would, for example equate Ronald Reagan with Julius or Augustus Caesar. Both men were good for the Roman Republic in its transition to Empire (although, if you watch Rome on HBO, you learn that Octavian (Agustus) was a bit of a perv – more in line with Cllinton ;)).

No, **our **Caligula came from Arkansas. Nero is, I understand, originally from Chicago or somewhere around there.

Caligula’s downfall came from seducing other men’s wives – using his power to rape them, if necessary.

Think about that, then consider the rape of Juanita Broderick by the then Attorney General of Arkansas. To whom can a woman turn for justice when she has been raped by the Emperor or the Attorney General?

An interesting fact: at one point there was an idea circulating in Rome that Juilius Caesar should have the right to have “relations” with any woman, married or not, as long as that woman consented.

Under Caligula – and under the former Attorney General of Arkansas – consent was not required.😦

Please demonstrate how Clinton compares with Caligula (except that their names both contain “C” and “l”

How Bush and Caligula compare is easy.
