Dear Friends,
Code:
I was just wondering if you could help me out some. I'm dealing with alot of issues from spiritual abuse in the past, including Fundamentalist Baptist Churches, Non Denominational churches, and (The one I totally fell for, hook, line, and sinker!!!) The Seventh Day Adventist Church. Does anybody know of a good community on the web for former adventists? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated...
Tommy

Pleased to meet you. How did you become a Catholic? Mine is a long story which involved several detours until I finally was fully accepted and confirmed in May of 2005. It started out that I was a member of the Church of God, and got baptized there about 20 years ago. Then, when I was 19 years old, I picked up a book called 27 fundamental beliefs of the SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST church and I read it and started believing that it was true. I also, two years later, stumbled across a copy of the book “America in Prophecy” by Ellen G.White. I was intrigued by it, and started reading it. Than, when I moved back to Georgia two or three years after that, a tragedy happened in my life, which brought me into a time of religious questioning which brought me out of fundamentalism into Adventism. A few years later, I came across Dale Ratzlaff’s materials (A former SEventh Day Adventist) and they exposed Ellen G.White as a failed prophet) Feeling heavily betrayed by her as well as by the Christ she preached, I rejected all forms of Christianity and started studying the new age in earnest. I was heavily involved in marijuana at the time. A few years later, I picked up a book called “Transformed by Truth” by Joseph Tkach, Junior. It revealed a journey similar to mine up to that point . The Worldwide Church of God had embraced traditional Christianity, so I joined up with them. I stayed with them for a while, than I got diagnosed as mentally ill and was put in a semi-independent living facility and I went to a non-denominational church near there. The story of my conversion started when a good friend of mine (An Agnostic, who was raised up by Converted Catholic parents) told me about how the Catholic Church had bravely stood up during the Civil Rights movement. This impressed me so much that I started to study the Catholic faith, and became fully involved in it about three years ago. I have grown more spiritually in the past three years than during my whole life wandering in these schismatic churches. I’m thankful to the Lord for showing me his mercy and grace. Take care for now…

Yeah, there is one thing that sometimes disturbs me. It is the fact that SEVENTH DAY ADVENTISTS prayed for me and their prayers were answered. Like, I told this Adventist girl that I was thinking of leaving the church, and she told me that she would pray for me. A few days later, I needed a ride home and the guy who took me home was a Seventh Day Adventist. Also, another time a Seventh Day Adventist prayed for me, and I was confused and I called the 700 Club and told them why I was confused (It was about the 7th day Adventist church) He told me he was a seventh day adventist. Can you understand now why sometimes I’m confused and I wonder if I’m doing the right thing? I hate to sound unstable, but if you knew about what the Adventist church taught, you might be scared too. I know God is not the author of confusion but of sound mind and peace but I do not know how to get rid of the confusion except to say a few hail marys and move on. Please everybody, pray for me…

Mine is a long long story too. I’d be happy to share but have to go to work and can’t post much now.

I was a senior at an Adventist college and started realizing a lot of what they were presenting as historical fact wasn’t actually supported by real history. Also, I had problems with them missrepresenting Catholic beliefs to bolster their own positions. (e.g. “Catholics worship Mary” , “the Catholic Church through Constantine changed the sabbath and forced Chrisitans to accept a pagan day…” ) You know the stories. If you’ve looked at Dale Ratzlaf’s materials, you probably know by now how many Adventists positions are based on falsehoods. I really like Dale Ratzlaf and have participated in some related former SDA forums. It helps to vent a bit about the frustrations of leaving Adventism. The other participants are almost all evangelical with some mixed pentecostalism and fundamentalism. That presents a challenge as many there have emailed me trying to convert me away from Catholicism rather than talk about Adventist issues.

I love it that there are beginning to be Catholic resources for ex Adventists online. There are a surprising number of us.

anyway, more later,

Once upon a time I was sharing some facts about Eastern Church history with an SDA. He said, “If what you are saying is true, what does this do to the Adventist interpretation of Bible prophecy?”

I said, “The words are yours, not mine. I challenge you to verify what I’m telling you in even secular encyclopedias. If you find what I’m saying is true, would you be willing to re-evaluate the Adventist interpretation of Bible prophecy?”

The thought a minute and said, “No.”

In other words, don’t confuse him with the facts. His mind is already made up.

here girls come and try to sell you books and not tell you what denomination they are from and when you tell them you are Catholic they look at you weird.

I see now. Praying did help. I am now happy to be Catholic, and I appreciate all the (name removed by moderator)ut you guys are giving me:D
Adventism is tricky, because they are so worried about what is going to transpire in the end times that they end up with a “Don’t confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.” mentality.🤷 Anyway, take care for now…

Yeah, I know. In Adventism saying you are Catholic is equivalent to saying you are Communist during the Mccarthey hearings! It is a sure invitation to be snubbed. And the reason they don’t share what denomination they are from is because they want converts, and when they plant doubts in your mind with their literature, they fill you in on it later. That’s why I disagree with Walter Martin’s assessment of the Adventist church. He said they are not a cult, but I would tend to disagree… Anyway, Blessings…

Tommy

P.S. What is the Tiber Swim Team?🤷

after i found out what denomination the girls that came by were in, i always wanted to tell them i was busy cleaning my guns and waiting on orders from the Vatican when they came by, but i’m to nice and would never do that… the thoughts have come into my mind however.

the tiber swim team means i converted to the Church of Rome.

peace.

oh, and the SDAs do one good thing. most don’t eat animals which is good because i seriously dislike factory farms and animal abuse. i just wish that they would go the extra step and go vegan since animals still suffer because of their by-products. oh, and because it’s healthier, and better for the environment! but that’s as far as i agree with them…

I am confused. Everyone here is talking as if this religion is a girlfriend that you pick up or leave. Does it really matter what denomination you are? Does it really matter how you worship? Shouldn’t the focus be on a relationship with Jesus Christ? If the Bible is true with all it says about salvation, grace, and mercy, will God really condemn you to Hell if you love and fear Him, even though you worship on different days? “Sorry, but you worshiped on the wrong day, guess you go downstairs!” I have a hard time believing that, but hearing everyone else’s opinion has me confused. I am an SDA, and I do not condemn every other religion as you say SDA’s do. I believe the main point is to accept the gift Jesus left for us on the cross and have a relationship with Him and he originally intended when we were created. Isn’t that the point? Is there some way we could all unify as one body without giving up our ideals? I don’t know, I just hate the idea of everyone resenting each other based on a title. It’s not a title; its a relationship.

If it doesn’t matter what denomination we all are, why did Jesus bother to establish a Church in the first place? Why didn’t He just say, “Go on and do whatever you want as long as you have some kind of relationship with me”?

In fact, He did just the opposite. He established the Church as our visible authority on Earth, and gave the Church the authority and guidance to establish the Sacraments as well. The Sacraments only serve to deepen our relationship with Him.

I am a former Adventist.

Adventists teach that during the end times the sabbath will be a test of loyalty and salvation will depend on remaining loyal to the 7th day sabbath.

Adventists also teach that the Catholic Church is the whore of babylon and that the papacy is the Anti-christ. (just read the Great Controversy if you haven’t done so before)

Adventists accept Ellen White (the author of the Great Controversy) as an inspired writer who’s writings are authoritative for doctrine.

Just a few reasons it DOES make a difference.

You might want to review the list of fundamental Adventist beliefs on their website. It would be wonderful if all Adventists believed as you do and stopped publishing anti-catholic materials and quit proselytizing other Christians, but my experience, and the experience of many other former Adventists, is very different.

GodBless

See, this is where I am confused. I believe most of what SDA’s believe and have seen evidence to back it up. But I don’t believe a lot of the stereotypical beliefs that people say Adventists hold. Do I believe only Adventists will be saved? No… that is not the loving and merciful God I serve. Do I believe Ellen White was a prophetess? No more than I believe I can be used to show God’s love as well as anyone else He needs. The list could go on… So what am I supposed to do? Found my own religion? I think that is stupid… I guess I am just so tired of seeing a religious battle between many denominations who focus more on proselytizing than on what really matters. I am certainly not trying to offend anyone; I’m just very confused and am thinking outloud.
