Is it possible that the reason the Church takes more heat, and gets more media attention, when one of our clergy does something so terrable is because society as a whole expects higher standards from the Catholic Church?

Nope. :nope:

If society did expect more of the Catholic Church, society would be more likely to convert.

Here is Talibama four people disrupted a Catholic mass and tipped over the altar a week or so ago.

I tend to agree with this statement. They don’t necessarily have to want to become Catholic to hold the Church and its people up to a higher standard. I think (note, this is an opinion and nothing more) that deep down in their hearts they are Catholic so they tend to see the Catholic Church as the moral compass for the world and if they would allow the Spirit to work in them they would indeed become Catholic

As to the topic of this thread, it is sad that some do not recognize that sex abuse happens in all walks of life.

Not only is the Catholic Church not the only religious organization having to deal with child abuse. But the incidence of it in the Catholic Church is below that of the general population. By far the majority of sexual abuse of children (under 18) takes place in the family. However schools, camps, daycares, etc. are not untouched by this evil.
All true - therefore, ISTM that we would do better to ask, “In what circumstances have reported incidents of sexual abuse occurred ?”

I’ve got news…not new news…just Jehovah’s Witness news.

Did you know…
In the JW religion you have to have two witnesses to a sexual molestation, and of course it’s almost impossible to have two witnesses to a child molestation. If a parent comes with their daughter to the elders, and says their daughter was sexually abused, the elders will ask and perpetrator of course he will say, “no, I didn’t do it”, then that’s the end of the matter. Most will NOT go to the police, because they don’t want to bring reproach on Jehovah…they will even punish the victim by saying she can’t tell anyone, (because of the two witness rule) or she will be disfellowshipped for slander.

Where child abuse can be proven, and the member is unrepentant, he or she is disfellowshipped from the organization. However, if they can convince elders that they have truly repented of their abusive behavior, they can be readmitted into the congregation. If repentant then she/he is not permitted to hold a responsible job in the congregation for at least twenty years. BUT…they are encouraged to do more door to door work…yes that’s right the nicely dressed JW at your door could be a pedophile.

For those interested. type in jehovah’s witness and sexual abuse. and check out these sites. lambsroar.org/ or silentlambs.org/

So my question: I thought I had read that, sadly, there is just as much abuse in the Protestant Churches but it doesn’t get the media attention like the Catholic Church. Is that true & are there any statistics to back that up?
Here’s a couple of interesting articles, not current but enough info to get the picture: 10 Myths about Priestly Pedophilia

Welcome to a collection of news reports of ministers sexually abusing children Be sure to check out the links on the left.

Several denominations including United Churches of Christ, United Methodists, Presbyterians and conservative Jewish organizations have their own Safe Environment-Protecting Children Programs for clergy, rabbies, religious educators, youth ministers and volunteers, so obviously it is a problem across the board. New research funded by the NEA is showing that abuse in the schools dwarfs anything going on in the churches.
The LDS church has a history of sexual abuse and coersion as well. I don’t have my resources handy at the moment, but www.exmormon.org has a discussion board where that topic is dealt with frequently and a section for personal stories.
