Sex and Literature

Recently my wife was pleased to see that I had taken an interest in reading novels instead of watching TV which is mostly a lot of junk anymore. She recommended a murder mystery that I am currently reading that has me totally engrossed. It a well written book that has me on the edge of my seat and I can’t wait to see what happens next. The problem is that the novel contains an occasional paragraph describing sexual interludes between the two main characters. My wife cautioned me about this before I started reading because she knows of my quest for sexual purity so I decided that I would simply skip or skim through those parts of the book which I have done. The rest of the book is very well wirtten and is 99% free of illicit material. The problems is that I know that the illicit sex contained in the book could be sinful for someone who intended to take pleasure from it. And although I do not have that intention I am concerned that it may be sinful because of its potential. The other problem is that there is no way to know if a book like this contained this type of material unless you know someone who read it first. So how can I enjoy reading good books without the fear of sinning? I thought that TV was so much worse, but it seems that today there is very little you can do without exposure to sex.

For years I was frustrated with fiction authors filling their books with immoral, pre-marital sex. Until I found Dean Koontz. Wow! He writes great mysteries/thrillers/suspense books, and I have yet to find one episode of immoral, pre-marital sex.

I appreciate the info on Dean Koontz, but I still have a question. What about the book I am currently reading? Would it be sinful to continue reading it if I made every effort to skim quickly through any sexually explicit material before any harm is done?

I don’t know if it would be a sin or not to quickly skim through sexually explicit material. I would think not, because you are not reading the book solely for those few paragraphs, and you will not entertain those thoughts when the book is through. Whenever I came to those scenes in past books I’d cringe and skim through the paragraphs until I found where the real story picked up again. It’s kind of like watching a movie that you didn’t realize how much nudity was in it. When you realize it, you simply bear those scenes so you can finish the movie and evaluate it as a whole. I would avoid buying future books by the same author, as they will most likely contain more of the same immoral behavior.

I must correct my earlier posting. In the Dean Koontz book “Sieze The Night”, the sequal to “Fear Nothing”, the main character does live with his girlfriend, but there are no immoral scenes. (But those two books were my least favorite of his that I’ve read.) That is the most immoral I’ve found any of his books, and that’s pretty darn good. His books are usually found in the Horror section of bookstores, but he writes many different genres. I haven’t even read any of his horror books.
