OP, the main purpose of marriage is to unite as one flesh and create new lives. We were charged to procreate, not to postpone that until WE decide it is the right time.

There are a heck of a lot of people who figured they’d wait for “the right time,” who are now unable to conceive and unable to accept that they made their choices when they chose a career over parenthood over and over again.

I believe that you should WANT to create new souls for God, with your intended, before you marry. If you are not open to life, you are not ready for marriage.

We live selfish lives today, geared toward what WE want, what WE enjoy, not what GOD wants us to do.

Pray about this. If you tell your priest that you do not want children, I believe he will not marry you.

oh and P.S. - About being able to afford 5 kids and not 6…God provides. After you buy all the stuff for the first one, and the 2nd if a different gender, you can re-use a lot of stuff or buy second-hand. Kids don’t need near as much junk as the TV tells you they do, and kids are worth more than any luxury item you can imagine desiring. Don’t think so far ahead, and don’t set limits unnecessarily.

Very interesting thread. God bless you, you sound like a really good Catholic guy. 😛

If we decide to get married but we do not want children, are we to abstain from having sex? We reached the conclusion of “Yes”.
**If you are not open to life 100% of the time…even if you can “get through” the marriage preparation - your marriage (tho may be legal) will not be Sacramental. You will not be married in the eyes of the Catholic Church.

When I came to understand what is means to have a valid marriage within the Catholic Church…we had our marriage blessed. We did not have (at the time of our wedding) a Sacramental marriage.**
