According to the teaching of the medieval Catholic Church, the exchange of vows followed by intercourse constitutes a valid marriage. No church ceremony, no legal document, not even witnesses are necessary.

Really? … this is exactly what J.R.R. Tolkien (a Catholic) wrote regarding Elven marriage in a posthumously published book of essays/notes.

Why are you surprised? Tolkien wove Catholic teaching all through the Lord of the Rings and other books of the same genre.
