In Leviticus 20, it’s written that sex during menstruation is a serious sin. Leviticus also condemns other grave sins like incest, homosexuality and bestiality, but it strikes me oddly enough that sex during periods is included in the list. Mensturation falls into the infertile period of the woman, which is naturally accepted by NFP. So why not during the periods?
Thomas of Acquino has addressed this issue, but from what I heared it has been misinterpreted that it can cause miscarriage or deformed children when having sex during that time, which is of course not true.
Besides, Jewish law distinguishes between ritually clean and ritually unclean woman, whereas christianity does not. Likewise, Moses tells divorce is possible where Jesus tells it’s not allowed. Not everything what is written in the Old testament is still applied nowadays (like stoning of people who commited adultery).
So what is the current stance of the Church regarding sex during menstruation?

You might want to do some research. What you state here is not always true.

It would be my understanding that this law no longer applies, as is the case with other laws regarding what it means to be spiritually “unclean.” I think part of the reason this was a law was because women on their period were considered unclean, so to touch them would make that person unclean as well. Women are no longer regarded that way (at least in a religious sense; some people still treat it as something to be ashamed of ).

As far as the physical aspect of it (since a PP brought it up): it may or may not be “gross” depending on the woman, which day it is, what time of the day it is, etc. etc. What many people (coughmencough) think it is does not seem to go with my personal experience or what the women I know experience. Ultimately, it’s up to the husband and wife to decide what they want to do and when they want to do it, so long as it’s in keeping with God’s plan for us. And sex during menstruation is not ruled out. 🤷

I’m a 22 year old guy and I don’t see what is “gross” about menstration, as it is a compleatly natural, normal part of life for women (until menopause). Surely something created by god could never been seen as “gross” but another beautiful part of gods creation? I hope that makes sense as I only recently found god.

Well, you probably aren’t the one doing the laundry, lol.

Your attitude is totally normal. My husband is in no way put off by menstruation. We just make sure we take a long shower afterwards. 🤷🙂

Yet another point of view. Studies have shown that women who have orgasms during their menstruation are more likely to develop endometriosis. While our ancestors may not have had a grasp of modern medicine or statistical techniques, they were good diagnosticians.

Can you link to these studies, or provide more information?

It may be linked to the Retrograde Menstruation theory, but most women have some degree of retrograde menstrual flow, even if they don’t develop endometriosis.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I’m not telling that I want to do it, I just want to know whether it’s permitted or not. I’m not trying to use it as birth control.
My becoming wife has always painful periods, I want to try out (after our marriage of course) whether having sex during that time will help her too relax herself and reduce the pain a bit. But like I told, I just wanna know what’s the stance of the church regarding this topic.

I would have absolutly no problem doing the laundry, I would want an equal relationship with my (future) wife and that means me doing laundry, ironing, cooking, changing nappies, getting up during the night with the children, doing the dishes etc I want my (future) wife to be an equal not running around tidying up after me, we are both adults, both parents and therefore both equally responsible for the housework and the children.
You could try giving her a hot drink such as hot chocolate as hot drinks can help, but try to avoid caffeine, a hot water bottle can help soothe the pain or even a massage (when your married) hope that helps her a bit, although these may not help as everyone is different so I would suggest asking her if there us anything you can do to help ease her pain.

Aaron, you’re a good man. 👍 God bless you on your journey to the wonderful sacrament that is marriage.

This may or may not work. If she is prone to emotional tension it could work; but back massages are always great too! 👍

Depending on what your family plans are, if this seems like a persistent or “unbearable” problem, it might be worth it to learn NFP to see if there is another kind of medical issue going on. Charting might p(name removed by moderator)oint an issue that you could otherwise miss. Just an FYI.

Good luck to you!

Why per say just because something is in the OLD testament does that make it no longer applicable?
Code:
Bloodborne disease's have always been around, like Hepatitis etc., , the Bible clearly says a woman is unclean then, and I agree.
Also, how about the fact that maybe a woman-(and most I know don’t care too) would rather WAIT until it is all done and overwith before resumming a healthy sex life.

At worst, it’s uncomfortable to do so then, as natural lubricants are not “present” as during the time between periods, as well as the fact SHE has to, like someone else said, do the laundry, instead of resting like we would ALL like to do then! Because during this time women have headaches, backaches, bloating, cramps, as well as all over body aches, and sex can and DOES make these symptoms WORSE!

Most of these posts are by men=aren’t we supposed to respect our spouse’s at least as much as other people we see everyday-hopefully MORE SO=but I am beginning to wonder from all these thoughtless posts, unless your own comfort & desire’s are more important than respecting your loved one’s body=looks to me like it is.

I hope you all “rethink” & respect your spouse…M:confused:

Don’t say that unless you HAVE one. My wife, ooh boy. Trust me; it’s gross when you wake up in the middle of the night and there’s congealed blood stuck between your thighs. It’s gross when you’re stuck on a bus with no way to tend to yourself, and it starts to have a VERY pungent and noticeable odor. It’s VERY gross when you’re ini public in the same situation and it bleeds through your pants or down your leg.

Seriously. A womans body is a beautiful thing in how it works, but there’s nothing beautiful in thick, glommy, smelly blood. According to my wife, at least.

I don’t think we have to pretend every bodily function is beautiful just because it is “natural”, especially considering humanity’s fallen nature.

Anyway, as others have suggested the Mosaic Law mixes elements of natural law with elements of temporary ritual law quite fluidly. It even happens in the Ten Commandments, and all the more in the other parts of the Law. This particular stipulation seems to be a ritual cleanness law that would no longer apply to Christians. That doesn’t mean it should be done, but I would presume the specific rule no longer has legal force for Christians.

While I don’t disagree that it is an umpleasent experience for a woman to go through, that does not make it, in and of itself, “gross” just uncomfortable and a little umpleasent for the woman. I do, however, know that god does not see anyone as “gross” at any point of our lives so what gives us the right to judge another of gods children?

It is seen as “gross” by society not by god and surely a husband should love everything about his wife at every point in their wonderful life together?
