Sex education in private schools

This was my experience as well. It was a Catholic K-8 school in the mid-90’s and the “Family Life” class was taught in 5th grade.

My school had a “family life” class in the 90’s as well. It was a good program. I remember the chapter on the female reproductive system and menstruation required the student to do the homework and discuss the chapter with a female family member. My grandmother took care of me often and she was taking care of me that day after school so she and I talked about it. She was a teacher herself and I remember her saying she wished that more schools had this program because it was age appropriate and it taught mostly the science but with some morality and it relied on family discussions as well.

Later on in high school we had discussions about sexual morality in our religion classes. They were very reasonable with regard to how far is “too far” before marriage.

It is a thought that perhaps the Nuns and Priests who teach that really do believe that because they are after all celibate aren’t they so have no real experience of sex never mind married life and how one gets to married life and where children come from etc.

For the most part, I agree with you. However, I don’t assume that **all **priests and nuns have never…you know…before they entered religious life.

True. A few priests I know, some whom I knew before they became priests, had been around the block a few times before they changed their ways and decided to dedicate their lives to God. I think they have a lot of real life experience in that regard to understand what most people go through and how hard it is sometimes to resist temptation.

I went to a catholic school my entire life. When we had sex ed (I was 12 or so), the nuns and priests would say things like, “if you hold hands with someone of the opposite sex, you WILL go to hell” or “if you kiss a boy/girl before you’re married, you’re SINNING!”

This was the early 2000’s so it wasn’t like it was in the 70’s or 80’s. I don’t know how they teach it now, but I’ve heard the same story from other people who went to different private schools as well.

In regards to these schools, why do they teach it like this? Scare tactic, I’m assuming? Did anyone else have this experience?

Okay, what kind of school did you attend. I went to a very orthodox Catholic school and our “sex ed” wasn’t like that at all. We had our local doctor and his wife, who happened to be very faithful catholics who endorsed NFP and didn’t prescribe birth control, taught us about sex in a chaste, yet informative way. It wasn’t like you described at all.

Maybe my school was just wierd though
