Sex in front of a church: sacrilegious?

Hi guys,

This is not related to the story above, but it’s a similar topic. I have a friend who claims to be Christian, but not Catholic. He even goes to church. Anyway, a pastor at a Pentecostal church has been accused of indecent exposure for masturbating in a parking lot. We discussed this in an email. Anyway, this friend of mine says he had sex in front of a church one time. I said it’s a morally offensive act. He says he doesn’t really see how it is any more morally offensive than doing it in front of any other building. He said it’s not the same as IN a church. How should I respond?

I think I’m going to be sick. I would be willing to make a sizeable bet that at least one of the couple is a former Catholic who had some gripe against the Church and was determined to disrespect it :mad:

Are confessionals usually locked, then? I must admit I’ve never heard of that before…

In my diocese, confessionals are never locked. Or at least I have never come across a parish in my diocese where the confessionals are locked.

Unless he lives with his wife in front of said church, it’s an offense, that should be all he needs to know.
 
We keep all rooms in the church locked. There are too many weirdos wandering around to give them room to hide out. Now the Confessionals and all the offices have glass in the doors to further discourage any inappropriate use.

Sex is a holy and sacred act, not a recreational sport. It is an intimate sharing of your life with your spouse, not something to treat as "let’s see how many places we can ‘do it’ in our lifetime. It can be a morally offensive act when it becomes an act of lust and not one of love. How loving is it to sit in a car in front of church with your spouse and have sex?
 
There was a competition a radio station was running down here, to get people to have sex in the most outrageous place ever.

The couple who won had sex in a confessional of a Catholic church while there was a funeral going on.

They filmed it.

I know we’re not supposed to judge, but I’d wager there’s a particularly hot part of hell reserved for them.

You seem to take eternal damnation rather lightly, no?

Couldn’t they just confess their sin and spend eternity in heaven with Jesus?

I feel that it’s important to verify the veracity of the story.
 
I recall a short story of a dying Anglican lady who had had a one night affair in a hotel in France when she was young. She realizes that she never confessed it and should. However the curate is so young she can’t bring herself to shock him. Then she awakes in that same hotel room with the same man - and there is no exit from the room.

One would really hate to end up crowded into a confessional with someone for eternity. :eek:

Is this story just made up? Well, I guess it must be. Anyway, if someone is having sex in front of a church just so they can say they did it, or to disrespect the church, there is definitely something wrong. If someone did it without even thinking about there being a church there or that it was at all sacred, I don’t think it was a problem. In my younger years I used to smoke LOTS of weed in a Presbyterian church garden which was directly next to a Catholic Church. I never thought of the moral repurcussions or really thought of disrespecting the church in general…I would imagine that a lot of people having sex in front of a church might be immature enough to not realize that they are disrespecting it. As was said, “forgive them father for they know not what they do” (which is probably my favorite line from all the Bible).

This actually happened in NY . The radio show was the Opie and Anthony Show and the couple had sex in St. Patricks Cathedral. The sponsor of the show was Sam Adams Beer. A campaign to boycott the product led to a public apology by the owner.

If there’s a law against it, which there probably is, it’s a morally offensive act. That’s from a societal POV. As well, it could be said if one is doing something (doesn’t matter what the something is, sex or whatever) on another’s property that they would object to if they knew about it, then it is morally offensive.

The act itself is morally offensive in the religious/theological sense; trespassing on another’s property in the societal sense, trespassing being defined as being on someone else’s property when they would not want you there if they knew about it.
