Sex in heaven?

It would seem a strange waste to resurrect the body and then to limit its use.

For those of you who said “no” what will the body do in heaven?

Dear Zemi,

I wonder why you think there would be no toddlers in heaven jumping around.

If we dont know about the so many other things we are speculating on, yet do, why do we rule things out…could we be projecting human thoughts to the divine?

Just my thoughts tossing about now…

Christians don’t. There will be no reason for it. We will already have the most ultimate pleasure in the Universe if we are lucky enough to make it there – the Beatific Vision.

I know Moslems believe there will be sex in Heaven however I’m not sure about Mormons. The sole purpose of sex is procreation and to give yourself fully to your spouse. We won’t have spouses in Heaven (again, Mormons however believe that marriage is eternal).

You’re right. I didn’t want to rule it out. Of course I meant, that there would be lots and lots of toddlers that got into heaven, but who knows what all of us will look like when we get there. I mean we will have bodies, that’s something “physical”. Yes, yes, I’m sure we won’t be made of atoms there, so to speak of physics is something not on spot.

The only body we have at our disposal that can give us a hint is Jesus’ ressurected body (from the Gospel accounts). It surely will be something special.

There could be toddlers all the way round, I just can’t square it up with the fact that in Heaven, all of us will have complete knowledge and awareness of wisdom, intelligence and love. And I’m quite sure we will be also expressing our love there also somehow by our bodies (dancing, singing, talking…? ). I’m sure that if God created them and we will have them also in Heaven, they will quite surely have a purpose there 🙂 IMHO. But that doesn’t mean that no toddlers will be there. I don’t know at all. It’s just my take on it. Of course I can be completely wrong.

Well, let me just correct myself. I think we will be humans and therefore still only finite. Therefore I think we won’t know everything. And perhaps every “minute” we will know and love more as was mentioned in my previous post.

Well…I just couldn’t grasp it with my limited mind 🙂 Really - maybe that’s why God didn’t ever bother to tell us something about Heaven.

This, I believe is the correct answer.

No marriage, no making babies, then no sex.

Now when there is a “new heaven” and a “new earth” I have no idea. Maybe we’ll be back in the baby makin business then too?

More importantly, will their be golf in Heaven and will I still hit the occasional snap hook? I mean sex I can “live” without but no golf, how can that be heaven?

Jesus did say there would be no ‘marrying nor giving in marriage’ in heaven. Remember the woman who married seven brothers one after the other - she’d be in for a good time if they were all still her husbands in heaven! They might complain a bit though 😉

Nor will we have children in heaven. So no marriage AND no children necessarily means no sex - for it would serve neither of the purposes it has on earth, not the unitive nor procreative.

Personally I would say an emphatic ‘no’ in trying to over-corporealise either heaven or the prescence of God. While we will retain our humanity in the sense of having a material body, God is not a compounded material substance (like we are) so the vision of his glory will be unlike any corporeal reality, and I don’t think physical sex will play a role. However, our vision of God’s glory will still occur through our material bodies and senses, which aren’t abolished.

Given all our desires are satisfied through the vision of God, why would we want/need anything else?
 
Having sex in Heaven would be like eating broccoli while having sex here on Earth.

Broccoli is good (in my opinion) but nothing compared to sex!

Likewise, you’ll be too busy being in the presence of God to mess it up by having sex!

It would be like eating a fine prime rib dinner, and washing it down with a diet Coke.

It would be like watching Don Giovanni on an old black-and-white TV set.

It would be like going on vacation with your in-laws!
 
Playing the “devils advocate” here, I personally would not discount the idea **solely based **on the fact “we will be too busy enjoying the the B.vision of God, we wont want to do anything else”

(I have not taken a stand either way on this to be clear)

If we object, based on the above reason, doesn’t this sound like what we are constantly hearing from our protestant brothers and sisters as to why they (the saints in heaven) can not pray for us, and can not hear our prayers? We know we will be doing other things (such as hearing prayers)

Just some thoughts, not thought out completely yet-:o

Nice analogies 🙂 I think they’re great, really. But I would say you are completely right if we were talking about sex in Heaven as we know it here on Earth. Not only it is viewed in a completely distorted way… but also the joy people have out of it now must be very, very limited when compared with what it was once like in our sinless state, before the fall.

I was wondering rather if God couldn’t transform it - from the “trial, limited” version we have here into an “updated unlimited” one in Heaven 🙂 Personally, I think it won’t be so as I think the marital act is a symbol for unity with God (it was a symbol for the Covenant with Adam and Eve) and thal all good things we experience today just point to something far, far more greater and fuller we will be experiencing in Heaven.
 
The thing is, I know about the B. Vision, and we will be so overwhelmed with the presense of God. It all sounds so perfect…but still part of me is trying to imagine what it would be like to have to spend eternity not joined with the man I love. It’s not about the lack of sex, rather the lack of being near him always. It’s slightly distubing and scary for me! 😉

  1. We are commanded to be Pure until marriage.
  2. When we marry, Sex is ok.
  3. Sex outside of marriage is a sin.
  4. Jesus said there will be no marriage in heaven,
  5. ergo - Sex in heaven is impossible since we will not be married. If we do have sex in heaven, it will be with someone we are not married to, and therefore, sinful. Since it is impossible to sin in heaven, it is therefore impossible to have sex in heaven.
counter complaint may be… well, the Law doesn’t apply in heaven…
So are you therefore saying that the nature of God and his Law are different if you are in heaven or Earth? This is impossible since God is unchanging. Therefore, the law still applies.

…and the Beatific Vision thing will be too “time” (!!?) consuming to be doing anything else.

The sex drive arguably serves the need within nature to procreate. As there will be no procreation, I guess that makes anatomical differentiation redundant.

But, it does appear conceivable that as normal functioning human beings, it may be possible. Who knows? Perhaps without the need to procreate, there will be a complete absence of desire. I certainly hope so 🙂
 
The body will have its function in Heaven; we will enjoy pleasure physically as well as spiritually. The body won’t simply be tagging along for the ride with the soul. In fact, we can’t know precisely what it will be like when the New Creation comes about, but it’s not unlikely that it will be quite like the original intent of this world (Paradise), but with the Beatific Vision as well. So the body will have plenty to do in Heaven (in fact theologians like Aquinas argue that it’s necessary for the fullness of enjoyment by the soul, not in the sense of it adding to the Beatific Vision, but in the sense that the soul is incomplete without a body and therefore requires the perfection of a body to be the fullness of itself), it will just be subject to the Beatific Vision and the Glory of God spilling over from the soul and “spiritualizing” it. I know there’s plenty I’d like to do with my body when I get it back at the Resurrection, all in the praise and Glory of God.

That being said, there won’t be sex the way we understand it. Sex serves two purposes: procreation and union between spouses. Procreation will be totally gone in Heaven, so that’s right out. The unitive principle between humans will still be present, but it will far surpass the “spiritual union through physical action” which we call sexual intercourse. We will be directly participating in the Life of the Trinity, along with all the other Saints, and we will be united with all of them through and with God in a more perfect way than sex can ever unite us. The unitive aspect of sex, then, is not a good in itself, but an approach towards the good of intimate Communion with the Saints in Heaven; the spiritual union we have with our spouses will be shared with all Saints, so sex will be unnecessary for that purpose.

With the two purposes of sex gone, there will be no place for it. Everything will be utterly fulfilled without it, not because it’s gross, but because it’s simply an incomplete expression of the Communion of Saints anyway. Our unity with our fellow Saints in Heaven will far surpass the unity and physical pleasure we have in sexual intercourse, to say nothing of our union with God. It would be like seeing someone face to face, but insisting on talking through a telephone; sex is to Heavenly union what our Earthly prayer is to seeing God directly and being fully united with the Divine Life.

So Heaven will be better than sex, but not in an altogether different way. Rather it will be better in the same category, as sex is simply the limited approach to what we attain in Heaven.
