Hello,

I was just involved in a discussion regarding the limitations of sexual practices in marriage according to the directives of the Catholic Church. I am a craddled Catholic but I am not well versed in the teachings of the church, something I am trying to change now.

I wonder if it is true, according to the teachings of the Catholic Church that oral sex between a man and a woman in marriage is not allowed or looked down upon by the church.

Can someone recommend some readings and/or quotes. I find nothing in the Catechism regarding this claim.

I thank you in advance for your time.

Ooops. I posted in the wrong forum. This should be in the Traditional Catholicism. Can someone please transfer this thread. Thank you.

This is one of those questions where I am not aware of a solid “yes or no” from the Church. I can give you examples of when it is ok and when it is not.

It cannot ever be an end unto itself.

It cannot be used to replace the marital act.

Basically, it seems to be acceptable as part of foreplay, but that is it.

Remember that if a sex act is not open to life, it is not allowed.

Thank you for your response ralphinal,

I thought sex in marriage could be recreational and a way to express, experience and share unity and love. Elderly people and infertile couples understand that they would not be procreating, yet are free to experience sex as recreational and to express their love for each other.

Does it always have to be with the objective to procreate?

seatuck,

Thank you for responding. I am going to search the topic on this forum. I’ll take a look at the books you recommended.

Thank you

No. The Church does not say that. The Church does say that we may not remove the possibilty of life. The aged or infertile did not choose that state. They are free to continue.

Artificial birth control is an attempt to close the possibility of life. That is not allowed. We may use natural family planning for certain reasons, as it is God’s built in, natural method

I see.

What is the situation with the ‘spilling of the seed’ and that a man can only deposit his semen inside the womb of a woman otherwise it is a sin?

Just what you said. It is from Genesis. The Church has long held it to mean no masterbation and no other anything that puts the chance of life out of the equation

Ralph,

Thank you. I learned something important from you today. Truly, there are things for which we need to live a long time in order to come to know them. I have been participating in sin and I did not even know. Yet, Our Lord Jesus Christ and Our Blessed Mother Mary have given me graces and blessing that certainly I am not worthy of and even so while I unknowingly was sinning.

So, if during the act of sex a man has an orgasm outside of the womb even though it is not that the couple is trying to avoid children but instead are simply just having sex the fact that the man did not place his seed inside the womb is a sin? This is what you are saying, correct?

Not always. There are other things that may occure to mitigate sin. He may have not meant to withdraw. There are others.

It is intent that matters. If you intend not to be open to life, it is a sin. If your intention was to be open but something happened, so be it.
