Is it a sin to have sex with your wife while she is on her period? My wife and I practice NFP and I am really struggling with it.

no, but some methods of NFP consider the period to be a fertile time because early ovulation is possible and a heavy blood flow could mask systoms. Also she may confuse irregular bleeding at the time around ovulation as her period.

There can however be other causes to irregular bleeding that can be a sign of real medical issues. If her charts are indicating that something is wrong, there are medical treatments that do not involve surpressing the fertility cycle.

Why do you think this would be a sin?

Regarding NFP, depending on your method the days with bleeding are considered days to avoid (for example, Creighton Model). So, it’s a prudential area regarding your reasons for avoiding and the seriousness with which you need to avoid.

No it is never a sin to have sex with your spouse as long as you are both okay with it.

I don’t know I just thought it was
I think there’s stuff in the OT that talks about it being unclean. But that was then and this is now and we’re under a different covenant. So no, its not a sin.

Just wondering, what are you struggling with? Using NFP or abstaining from sex?

Abstaining from sex.
With that, I can relate.

Here is what I found. I was letting my physical needs control my behavior. I had to learn how to control myself and my sake and my wife’s. I read what the church taught. I read materials from this websites and more. I read my bible. I had to retrain myself from what society has taught me. I had to look at sex differently. It took a few months but it was well worth it. I wish I would have done this along time ago. It is kind of a freedom, knowing that I control my body, not the other way around.

Not a sin whatsoever.
It’s a personal preference thing.
It CAN cause confusion with NFP because sometimes a long period can mask oncoming fertile signs as you move from phase 1 into phase 2, but statistically this isn’t “normally” a problem.

I need to do this, any strategies or suggestions?

That is something that you will have to figure out. Since I do not know what motivates you, I would not know what works. For me, it biggest push was when my first daughter was born. I know that she will choose a possible husband years from now (hopefully after 30ish…), but she will compare him to me. I will be her standard so I must be the highest standard I can be. Some of that means her Mom (my wife of course) is more important than me and my needs. That is were I get my strength from. That is what love is. It is the selfless act of giving yourself to another and not expecting anything in return. She is not their to satisfy my needs, I am there to fill her needs, whether it is physical or emotional.

For Example: My wife is currently pregnant we cannot engage in normal relations because of it. Do I still have urges? Yes! But I control them now. I do not let them tell me what I want. She usually says no, I do not ask for a reason, I just cuddle and let her know I love her no matter what. I do not get mad, I do not get “sexually frustrated”. If I do, I know that I have sinned against her and even against God. It is not her fault, it is mine.

To the OP: it’s a laundry issue, not a moral one. One thing to consider, though, is that for some women, blood in the vaginal canal is very irritating/sore, and makes intercourse uncomfortable. Knowing that might help in the self-control dept.

Ricofall, Your post is beautiful!! Reminded me of my very devout and holy father who sacrificed his whole life for his wife and six children. Keep Jesus by your side so you can continue on this path of selfless love.

It depends on what motivates you. For me, knowledge is power. I read everything I could about the beauty and gift of our sexuality, and why it is important to view it as self-*giving *rather than mutual taking. I prayed about it. I prayed for my spouse. We had many discussions about changing the way we view our sex life. Eventually something just clicked and made sense, and I felt free from that particular burden.

For my husband, he found fasting to be very helpful. He also found that having constructive ways to deal with stress helped as well.

I was very touched by your post, you have so much love and respect for your wife. Your children have a great role model.

Thank you all for who commented on my post. 👍

I think that what the OP said is common among men. We were not taught how to be men. We where taught that we can be a guy. A guy is cool and mellow. Hides and avoids responsibility. Guys are suppose to be the transition to men. But I feel that society teaches that we can be a guy never really grow up. We have ABC for all the sexual pleasure we want with no baby consequence. We can sin all we want because it is not against any ‘real’ law. Cheating is only cheating if you get caught. Stealing is only stealing if you get caught. The state does not teach us, parents may not teach us or know how to teach us (mine were divorced), Hollywood role models are a joke. I finally had to sit down and figure my path. I can only hope that all guys can become men. BTW, it is a never ending process. I do now welcome the challenges of what life has to offer. It would be easy to sink back down, to a guy status, after all, that is easy. So I pray that the OP finds his way. I would recommend a group called Men of St Joseph. They are a new group that is springing up. Maybe they have a chapter in your area.
