I know this is a little weird for me to ask but my grandparents have raised me like their own. They were not able to have their own children because my grandma was diagnosed with cancer within their first year of marriage, and her chemo killed all of her eggs, instead God gave me to them. My grandfather had a daughter from a previous marriage and could not raise me. So in saying this my grandparents took me in as their own.

This is my question. Since my grandparents are both older in age and because they can not concieve their own children are they not allowed to have sex?

I am a Theology student and I couldn’t really come to asking this question infront of my class because I don’t think it was so appropriate. Although, I’m asking it out of respect for the Trinity and my grandparents salvation. Since they really don’t understand Theology of Marriage and since I have yet to take this class thus far. I sure hope I do though I have a lot to learn.

Thanks in advance!!!

They are fine. 🙂 Married couples can, and should, continue relations even if infertile. Their unions are still blessed by God, even though they do not receive visible blessings of children from those unions. They are still called to express their spousal love in the marital embrace designed by God for all married couples. When God chooses to not bless a couple’s marital relations with the natural fruit of that union, ie children, they are still being fruitful in sanctifying each other and their marriage. Married couples can also continue having marital relations after the woman has ceased having her monthly cycles, menopause. I hope this helps.

Remember Abraham and Sarah…
Genesis 17:17 (New International Version)
17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?** Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”**
How about Zechariah and a Elizabeth…
Luke 1: 13, 18-20 (New International Version)
13But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.
18Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."
19The angel answered, “**I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, **and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.”
So…as long as your grandparents are not doing anything to prevent a pregnancy…in other words thwart God’s plans…they are okay!! But, they should remember that God’s ways…are not their (our) ways…so, suppose she became pregnant…God’s will must prevail…regardless of age and human wisdom. Amen!

Pax Christi

P.S. tell your grandpa…if grandma becomes pregnant…don’t question God’s plans…unless he doesn’t mind being struck dumb for nine months!

The marital act is intended to be both open to life and promote marital unity. Your grandparents are fine.

I am not sure why Priest do not mention this more from the Pulpit, like they use to, but Holy Matrimony is a formal vocation. It is not just something you do like buy a house or something like that. I am sure your Grandparent’s intent when they got married was to have a family.

I like to use this quote from one of the CAF Apologist:

"Michelle Arnold:

It is important to remember the purpose of marriage: To provide for each spouse a partner to help him or her on the road to heaven. It is a vocation that forms the partners in sanctity, whether or not their marriage is blessed with children."
