I was reading a thread about condom use and whether it is/should be sinful to wear a condom for protection from STDs with contraception as a side effect. The answers made sense to me, that sex without the possibility of procreation is just recreational sex. But what if you are already pregnant? You obviously can’t get pregnant again while you’re with child.

So, is it sinful for a married couple to engage in sexual activities while the wife is pregnant?

The morality of the act of intercourse does not depend upon the presence or absence of the “possibility” of pregnancy but rather on whether or not the act itself is properly ordered to both unity and procreation.

Sex while naturally infertile - pregnant, post-menopause, etc - is perfectly fine. There is no deliberate attempt to prevent the procreative nature of sex.

There are two aspects to sexual intercourse:
  1. Procreative
  2. Unitive.
To use a condom during pregnancy violates the unitive aspect. To use a condom at any other time violates both the procreative as well as the unitive aspect.

additionally --one needs to discuss with the doctor this question. The medical aspect is not something we are permitted to get into in this forum.

But I will note there can be times when it one ought to abstain.

In catholic moral, the marital act during pregnancy is , per se, totally okay, is not sinful, is not wrong.

Objectively and by principle, that is not a reasonnable reason for wife of refusing the request of union of body coming from her husband;

By exeption, if there are medical issues (see with a catholic doctor), wife has the moral right to refuse the marital act and the husband has the moral obligation not to ask for it. If wife is tired by her pregnancy, she can say no, of course, because she is tired and not because her situation of pregnancy, per se, is a prohibition coming from the natural law or the catholic law.

It is very necessary to understand that the motives of the conclusion are as important as the conclusion, itself. The rules okay, but with the good intellectual approach, otherwise there would be many bans concerning the union of bodies: absurdity, the " ism " ideologies and the " ism " heresies…etc. The fact of discerning is very important, it is a duty, an obligation

In catholic moral, the marital act can be for the bonding of love and for fun in the respect of natural law of the natural mechanism of union of bodies, even during the pregnancy.
