I learned about it in 1985 when the Louisiana scandal broke. I read about it in national news magazines. The pope was a healthy and vibrant man at the time. His brilliant and successful struggle against the Communists in Eastern Europe attests to that.

I am judging him by tireless effort he exerted to topple the communist governments in Eastern Europe. Perhaps he wasn’t fit as a fiddle, but that didn’t stop him from successfully confronting a strong, ruthless, and entrenched power. I applaud him.
