Sexual Abuse in other faiths?

I once entered a conflict with an anti-Catholic fundamentalist online. He forced me to drop everything and do a huge internet sweep to find ‘proof’ of sexual abuse in other denominations. I found what seemed like a metric ton on Baptists and Mormons. I cut and pasted so much information, he eventually conceded and tried to distance himself from the Baptists. Ha, ha… 👍

Great! I hope he eventually made it Home after one of his prejudices was removed. Many people are absolutely convinced that this problem exists nowhere else and that it is only in the Catholic Church, an idea which of course serves Satan well because it prevents people from learning the truth about the Church.

Here is a recent one: Serbian Orthodox Church Rocked By Sex Scandal
The Serbian Orthodox Church has approved the resignation of a powerful cleric amid sex-scandal claims that culminated this week with the publication of a graphic video appearing to show him engaged in sexual activity with young men. …
Jovanovic says Kacavenda personally appealed to him to supply young children for sexual purposes and frequently called on high-ranking church officials to organize trysts with young theological students.
It is my belief that sex abuse goes almost completely unreported in Orthodox churches because of the close connection in many countries the people have with their Orthodox church and their patriotism and sense of nationalistic pride.

Sex abuse goes on just about everywhere - it is not a religious ‘thing’, it is a human ‘thing’.

Yes, there are numbers in the heirarchy of ‘The Church’ who have been actively involved in abuse and/or cover-ups and the like, and this as a [reflex?]consequence has led to a hæmorrhaging of active Church attendees.

Thank God [and publicity] it is at last being robustly faced and dealt with - and not before time, methinks.

I do however also feel what has happened regarding the likes of paedophilia and other abuses is a sort of ‘backhanded compliment’ from Satan - that he should work so hard to undermine what he sees as his greatest earthly foe, Mother Church, by attacking what he perceives as her Achillies Heel - the human element.

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defence against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Absolutely. I think, I hope, (I can’t remember) that earlier in this thread are posts with statistics about public school teachers and the general public. We shouldn’t even really have to “prove” any of this, but unfortunately the media tends to like to put Catholic priests in their headlines more than members of other groups.

Yes! He can’t attack the supernatural element. The battle is waged in human hearts and it will continue until the end.

But "lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." 🙂

That is not true. Several years ago there was a Russian Orthodox Monastery in Blanco Texas that was closed due to sexual abuse on the young “novices”. The abbot and all the clergy there were imprisoned.

They had a big business going from pilgrims who came to see the Icon of the Theotokos who “wept” tears of mineral oil.

What is not true? Notice I said almost. 😉 But your point is well-taken.

In Texas. What I had in mind when I wrote “the close connection in many countries the people have with their Orthodox church and their patriotism and sense of nationalistic pride” was Orthodox living in primarily Orthodox countries. In some of these countries, the Orthodox religion is part of their national identity, and to wound one is to wound the other. Sexual abuse by clerics used to not be talked about. Sexual and physical abuse within families used to not be talked about. However, I would say that that is slowly changing.

Also, I would say that Orthodoxy is just not on the radar of most English-language media to the extent that the Catholic Church is; they don’t have the hate-on about it like they do for the Catholic Church, so it doesn’t make big international news headlines if a cleric is charged or convicted.

There have been convictions for sexual abuse of boys among the ultra Orthodox Jewish community in NYC and in up-state New York.
Wherever there is a need for power and control there will be sexual abuse. This is the real issue at heart.

If you want to know more about sexual abuse and the JW’s, check out the website: Silent Lambs. It’s quite horrifying.
