I have always understood Catholic Teaching to include all aspects of the sexual union between a husband and wife; that is, that we are to be open to life but that God made the act pleasurable and so it should be enjoyed. I guess I do not understand the question…are you saying it has to be either/or rather than both/and?

It serves as both a bonding and procreative purpose. From what I understand, NFP is not only to fulfill both those aspects of the marital embrace, but also to strengthen the bond. Postponing pregnancy is acceptable also I believe, but by postponing if you mean postponing for years on end, then no. Obviously the church is a church of common sense and therefore they do not expect you to have 10 children in 10 years of marriage.

What the husband and wife chooses in terms of the spacing out of births is too subjective as it’s dependent on each family’s circumstance, best to discuss with a priest.

Strap yourself in–The Church does not condemn “avoiding pregnency” *per se. *It condemns intrinsicly immoral means to avoid pregnancy.

NFP allows each act of the marital embrace to be open to procreation. The act is whole by being procreative (which doesn’t necessarily mean fertile) and unitive-because nothing is interfering with the act as God created it. The Church isn’t against spacing babies–a woman doesn’t have to have all the children physically possible. Birth control–ie the controling of births, is fine by the Church. A couple could decide to abstain totally or use periodic abstinence (NFP) if the reason is serious/just/grave. Contraception, on the other hand, is contrary to the procreative aspect of the marital embrace. It puts chemical and physical barriers in the act.

You might want to read the Catechism about family and marriage…

Why can’t sex be both pleasurable and for procreation? The two aren’t mutually exclusive. Isn’t it pleasurable and exciting to know that during any single moment of intercourse God could give you a child? Even if you are using NFP to avoid, it doesn’t have a 100% success rate.

Any time that you and your spouse are in the intimate embrace of love there is a chance a child will be created. If that isn’t ecstacy I have no idea what is.

I’m childless, and we are using NFP to avoid right now, but still each special moment can result in a gift from God…just feeling that close is a gift in and of itself. If God decided it was our time to have a child, I would be ecstatic!

I would read the Catechism. Then I would read any books on sex you can find at a Catholic bookstore. It really isn’t as either/or as people want it to be sometimes.

I don’t believe in NFP. I think it’s kind of…a bad idea but then again my years of possible child baring are coming to a close and I’d would welcome any children I was blessed with. That said I also wanted a large family and don’t think I would have ever used it all things being what they are. I’m not judging those that use it. What they do is between them and GOD but there would have to be serious issues at play to lead me down that path.

To answer your original question I believe it’s for both. God wants to have pleasure in life but he also said be fruitful and multiply. 👍

herreradj6,

First, we get a post like this, from a new member, about every six weeks.

Second, the Church teaches that the procreative and unitive aspects of marital sexuality are EQUAL. One is not to be subordinated to the other. Most people understand that to mean we should not use the pleasurable aspect of sex without its being open to the possibility of life. But it also means not robotically pursuing pregnancy to the detriment of the bonding and pleasure the spouses share.

Third, I always want to ask people who post this idea this question: Why did God design our bodies as He did? He could have made it possible for us to procreate without any pleasurable feelings at all. It could be like chewing food. And yet, He designed our bodies to give one another pleasure so profound that it has been described by some Catholic thinkers as “a foretaste of Heaven.” Did God make a mistake? Is it just a lure, designed to force us to procreate because He has so little faith in our ability to love and choose wisely? Why do people who think as you do seem to take such a dim view of this wonderful gift God gave us? The pleasurable aspect of marital sexuality is directly linked to its bonding effects. Both partners secrete the hormone oxytocin after climax. That is known as the “bonding hormone.” It promotes feelings of well-being, caring, and attachment. Nursing mothers secrete the same hormone when feeding their babies. This bonding effect is NECESSARY to good marriages. Sometimes, at the end of a hard day or week, that bond is all the couple has left to sustain their commitment and remind them that they love each other. It helps get them through the bad times, and enhances the good times.

Uniative and procreative.

Both are equal, both are essential. Without either element (love/bonding and openness to life) the act becomes immoral.

God Bless
