He said:

We are sexual beings. We are called to want love and to give love. So if we are wandering along the beach and we see a beautiful woman in a bikini and we have a sexual thought about her… well ok, that’s fine.
Such would not be correct…something got lost in translation here…

One is not to consent to lustful thoughts at all!

It is not fine. More needs to be said.

Of course we have to distinguish between temptation and consent…just cause a thought occurred to one does not mean one has consented…has sinned.

Mortal sin is when there is grave matter (such as lustful thoughts), full knowledge and complete consent.

Even one lustful thought that with full knowledge is given complete consent to: such is a mortal sin…
I think I have to disagree for two reasons. 1. not every sexual thought is thought of with complete consent. Sometimes our more primal wills well up at times that we do not decide. It isn’t a thought that one is dwelling on. 2. To say that a single sexual thought is lust (one of the seven deadly sins) takes away from the gravity behind those sins. A mortal sin is a sin pertaining to grave matter, and a single sexual thought will not envelope a person’s mind or will. A single passing thought is not grave matter because it is not making you a slave or becoming your vice. The thought can be gone as quickly as it came.

To illustrate: I have sexual thoughts at times where I would rather not and it isn’t like I am DWELLING on the thought. It is merely a thought passing through my mind. If I choose to indulge in the thought I am committing the sin of lust. If I pray the thought out of my head I am exercising chastity even though I have normal human urges.

I liked what this guy had to say about it

davidmacd.com/catholic/chastity_video.htm

I agree with what he says and my view is this, there is nothing wrong with desiring sex so long as it is inside of marriage, God intended for us to have sex with our spouse in marriage. So wanting marriage because you desire to have sex in a loving marriage is not wrong, but if it’s the only thing then there’s something wrong.

However it’s when we have lust for someone else or lust for the sake of lust, it is bad and therefore there is nothing wrong with asking God to take the temptation away. Alcoholics turn to God to take the temptation away from drinking and thus we as Christians who wish to abstain from lust which leads to sexual sin should turn to God and ask for help.

As for “letting pass” some can do it, I’m working on abstaining myself and I have found that I need to turn to prayer when lust rears its ugly head, otherwise I’ll be gnashing my fingers, kicking my feet, and probably go and sin.

Please read again the post (I see also you responded to an earlier draft) and also the few I posted above. All is in context together.
After reading your edit it seems like we are on the same page.

God’s blessings,
Joshua

Is it a sin to have a sexual urge or desire?
No
Or is it a sin when we give in to it by entertaining or acting on the feeling?
Sex is not evil. Sexual pleasure is not evil. We have to strive to avoid satisfying lust. Lust turns us inward, rejects ferility and overall seeks sexual pleasure isolated from its purposes. Generally we should not harbor sexual thoughts for the sake of indulging in sexual pleasure.
Also is it wrong to ask God to take away the desire when it arises?
I’d say this is disordered. I would advise you to ask God to help you come to a greater appreciation and respect for your sexuality and to come to an understanding in the virtue of chastity.
How can someone control their sexual desire without committing a sin?
Frequent reception of the Sacraments, a regular prayer life, avoiding occassions of sin and what you expose yourself to throughout the day.

thanks for the responses thus far.

So it is wrong to ask God to take away the sexual desire; but what if you really can’t control it when it arises or it leads to do sinful things; will it the be ok to God to take it away?

I have another another question do we commit mortal sin by our thoughts or thoughts and actions.
Danielle, if you were to ask God to take away the the good with the bad, you’d be left with no human drives at all. Go to confession. If its a habitual sin, you’re probably lacking full consent of the will anyway. Sin is the weeds, virtue is a very slow growing plant. So you have to keep weeding the garden of your soul and going to the sacraments to feed that plant with sunlight and water. You can’t just thow up your hands, say “God just take the entire garden away! I just can’t do it so just give me mud.”

Sin requires consent of the will, so no, mere desire or urges are not sins.

Sin presupposes consent of the will and knowledge of the disordered character of the action. Simply suppress dirty thoughts that enter your mind, refrain from acting on disordered urges, maintain custody of your eyes and thoughts, etc.

Is it a sin to have a sexual urge or desire?
No. Sexual urges are in fact God given desires.
Or is it a sin when we give in to it by entertaining or acting on the feeling?
It is a sin when we allow our natural passions to rule us in a manner that leads us to sinful actions. The drive itself is not sinful, but with sexual sins, we are called to cultivate chastity which is a cultivation in self mastery.
Also is it wrong to ask God to take away the desire when it arises?
I would encourage you to pray for the grace to avoid sin. Suppressing your sexual desires throws out the baby with the bathwater. Certainly it would seem that many try this approach without success, but some do successfully suppress their sexualities and have difficulties suddenly unlocking the door and letting their sexuality out. It can be confusing because before you’re married its like you’ve locked some abused child in the closet who keeps escaping and who you beat and drag back into the closet. Then you get married, unlock the closet and find the child is so afraid of you that the child huddles in a corner to get as far away from you as possible. Then you can get it in your head that “well you have to pay your marriage debt” so you start yelling and screaming and abusing the child again to try to force the child out only to find it makes the situation worse.

I would encourage you to respect your sexuality and to see it as a positive faculty that you must strive to govern. Thus rather than abusing the child, you discipline the child, you set limits on the child, but you ensure that the child is not demeaned.

The way I see sexuality now is that sexual desire is like wind and you are like a sail. Now, an inexperienced person on a sailboat will just float into chaos and have no control. Chastity is like becoming a well trained sailor. Since marriage, I’ve learned to see my sexuality in much broader terms. It is not merely eroticism. It is any physical expression of communication especially as it relates to my being female. So I see giving birth as a sexual process. I see giving a friend a platonic hug as a sexual communication though completely appropriate. I’m not lusting in these situations. There is nothing erotic, but in understanding that all these things we don’t think of as sexual as actually an aspect of our sexuality helps us to recognize that it is one and the same “wind” that blows us. Thus as the Catechism says
2347 The virtue of chastity blossoms in friendship. It shows the disciple how to follow and imitate him who has chosen us as his friends, who has given himself totally to us and allows us to participate in his divine estate. Chastity is a promise of immortality.
Chastity is expressed notably in friendship with one’s neighbor. Whether it develops between persons of the same or opposite sex, friendship represents a great good for all. It leads to spiritual communion.
In regards to the wind directing your course to erotic sexual behavior, that is a tough one. Generally speaking, it is good to take advise from your elders who’ve had experience “sailing” into the sexual waters who know “Ok, if you turn your sail this way, the wind will likely take you over here.” So you want to avoid “near occassion of sin.”

Its not perfect though. Resistance can in fact build sexual tension and as your relationship grows, sexual tension will build.

I would thus encourage you not to be too hard on yourself. Go to confession frequently and expect cultivating the virtue of chastity to be a long process. You’ll be clumsy with it in the beginning just as someone is on a sail boat the first time, but you can learn to master yourself so that you can read the winds and still have full command over yourself.

It’s not a sin to despise one’s sexuality and ask God to lessen it. Why would such a request be sinful?
