Sexual Dreams - What's Going On?

I realize that most everyone has interpreted this from a religious viewpoint, but psychology comes into play when it comes to dreams. Just because you are dreaming about sex does not mean you are a sinner and are going to hell.

Dreams use symbols to represent things in our lives that we are trying to work out. Sex may represent a connection or an intimacy that you are trying to forge with another person. Are you struggling with a faltering personal connection in your life? It can also be hormones. The books I’ve read on pregnancy say that during the hormonal spikes that occur in a woman’s body, she may have erotic dreams. It is normal and nothing to be ashamed about.

Others may disagree, but I take a pretty practical view of such things. I don’t see it as a threat–if I have a wierd dream, I let it go and continue my day of prayer and being kind to others. After all, it was just a dream.

I’m kinda bummed about an issue that has been going for years (most of my adult life). It seems that I frequently get sexual-type dreams, either having sex with my husband or with others. Since my recent reconversion back to the Church, I’ve been taking steps to rid myself of temptation and evil thoughts of this nature, and I do fine while I’m awake, but when I sleep, they seem to continue…I had another one last night, with someone other than my husband.

This is really starting to disturb me, and I’m wondering what the heck is going on in my subconcious? I understand that in dream interpretations, the sexual matter in the dream does not necessarily mean that I have a tendency to be “loose” (though my fallen-away past has proven that, and I’ve reconciled myself never to be put in that position again) but it could represent an area in my life that I feel I’m lacking (maybe lack of intimacy, for example). I wish sometimes that I could have more holier dreams - ya know what I mean?

Should I get all stirred up about it? Can I do something that can turn things around in my subconcious??
I don’t think you should worry about this. I think the more you worry about it the more of an issue it will be. (Like try your hardest not thinking about any white bears.)

Sexuality is a part of our biological nature, temptations are a part of our nature, desire is a part of our nature. What you’re experiencing in your dreams is very likely just a part of that.

Yeah, I’m kinda a worry-wart!

All of your insights on this thread have been a tremendous help. The dreams still continue, but now I’m not as concerned about it as I was before. I continue to pray and try my best to live my life the way our Lord intended it to be, and I thank Him for that!
