Sexual jokes.. it maybe funny but it is a sin

To my fellow Catholics and Non-Catholic Christians,

May the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

I like to discuss this openly. The media and the general public talk very sexually explicit jokes. I have heard it from soldiers, and the general public.

They joke about masturbation, sex life, etc. Even though the one who jokes about this, do they know the danger that this type of behavior is serious?

In my opinion, I believe sexually related jokes is a grave matter. Anybody else have an opinion and concern about this matter?

If you have know friends who joke about sex, do you tell them that it is offensive and how would you tell them in charity that sexual jokes displeases God?

They may tell you, you are too serious. How do we promote chastity to others?

I totally agree that sexual jokes are offensive to God.

Sex is for marriage and is elevated to a Sacrament in Catholicism. As such it is not a subject for humour. It is Sacred.

yes, you can control it, just as you can educate your tastes and preferences in other areas, such as food, movies, music, art etc. Expose yourself only to humor that is genuine, that does not rely on shock value or insults to elicit a reaction.

Not if you control yourself and don’t encourage the jokes. Even still, I don’t think it’s a *mortal *sin.

This issue is really bothering me right now. I was watching TV, and there were jokes that were sexually suggestive in this particular show. Now, I was just watching it, and when a sexual joke came along, I started laughing. Now, a few moments later, I realized that I may have sinned by laughing at the joke. I continued watching the show, then minutes later, another sexual joke came along. I tried to not laugh, but when the person who was watching with me laughed and the joke became increasingly funny, I chuckled as well. I was, at that point, really confused by whether I was sinning or not and stopped watching the show.

I’m really for sorry for this, but have sinned in both occasions by laughing at those sexually suggestive jokes? If so, must I go to confession now?

I think we should take it a step further. We should never make jokes about anything that is sacred. Since life is sacred, we should never make jokes involving living things, or any part of God’s sacred creation.

Well, I’ll admit there are times when I hear one, I will laugh if it’s a funny joke. But then I’ll just go away from the source.

Yes, they can lead to sin or a near occasion of it. I’d joke around with a colleague in such a manner, thinking it was nothing–until the atmosphere between us changed and I could tell he was thinking of me in a sexual way. I put an immediate stop to the joking and placed a distance between us; I had no idea that what I thought was simple “joking” was really something serious. Never again.

I respectfully disagree.

A duck walks into a store and aks the guy behind the counter, “Have you got any duck food?”, to which the guy responds, “No, we don’t carry duck food.”

The duck leaves, but comes back the next day, asking, “Have you got any duck food?” The clerk, suprised, says, “Um, no…we don’t have duck food – we don’t carry it.”

The duck leaves, and comes back the next day, and again asks, “Have you got any duck food?” Now, the clerk is beginning to get annoyed, so he says, “Look, we never have duck food - we don’t carry it, so we don’t order it, so we’ll never have it! So, if you ask me for duck food again, I’ll…I’ll nail your head to the floor!”

The duck pauses, then asks, “Have you got any nails?”

The guy says, “No.”

The duck says, “You got any duck food?”

This is one of my favorite jokes of all time. Please explain how this joke is sinful, given that it involves two living creatures.

All jokes, comedy, or things we find humorous involve living things… usually something stupid that a person or critter does.

Sex is an integral part of life. Without it, life wouldn’t exist. So there is an unlimited supply of material to look upon, and make a joke about.

One of my favourite comedians is Bill Engvall. He can do a 1-1/2 hour show without swearing/cussing, and have 1500 people rolling in the aisles… how? Because he tells stories about LIFE… Married Life…
(and if you honestly look back into your own history there are some pretty darn funny things you & hubby have done that’ll bring a smile to your face)
One of my favourite bits of his is when he’s describing a particular night when he & his wife were getting “frisky”. She’s hollering & yelling, and he’s thinking “Oh yeah, I’m da man”… until she belts out “BILL, YOU-ARE-ON-MY-HAIR-GET-OFF”!!!

Our ability to laugh at ourselves or actions (in retrospect) is another one of Gods gifts. Jokes of a sexual nature are just a part of our coping with our own imperfection.

Meaning no disrespect, but – taken to its logical conclusion – this means that it’s sinful to watch “I Love Lucy” or “The Honeymooners” from the 1950’s! Those shows from a much more innocent time were based on the foibles, misunderstandings, and silliness of everyday life amongst “living things” - namely, people! How can that be wrong?

Then again, I must admit that Denis Leary’s No Cure for Cancer absolutely slays me – and that one’s practically dripping with obscenities.

I think it depends on one’s sensibilities, and on what is likely to lead one to sin. Doesn’t it?
