The husband is able to achieve an erection, but often unable to maintain it. That is why I think the issue is more mental than physical. How is that for not beating around the bush.

BTW I am the husband.
That is a medical issue. So, if you employ logic to theology you will see that of course the Church would not condemn someone for a mental or medical issue. Did you really think She would?

If you missed mass because of a car wreck, you would not have sinned for missing Mass. Same here.

I am not a medical doctor and it is against rules to dispense medical advice. But there can be treatment for the issue. I would suggest a couple of things. 1) Step back and look at this logically and theologically. 2) Seek counsel of a good priest. 3) be grown up enough to be able to talk about these issues clinically. I understand it seems embarrassing but you have got to move past that. 4) Seek medical help if you need to.

You know as well as I do that if someone said to you that the Church condemns in mortal sin all those men who suffer some for of impotence that it would be rubbish. So really, you know the answer, right? Please tell me that deep down you know the answers to these questions.

I am not concerned about committing a sin or causing my wife to sin. I am afraid the problem may be related to a long standing desire for something I can not receive. I am thinking about seeking counseling to see if that will do help. I have been praying asking to eliminate the desire for a couple of years. It just gets frustrating knowing that my wife wants something that I will probably be unable to give her.

I have to say it is really quite comical all of the responses this thread is getting. Merry Christmas, and God bless you all!

I think you are not struggling so much with the CCC or church teaching but rather basic biology. For an act to be “open to life” or perhaps ordered to the procreation of life, something has to happen. Finishing in the appropriate place is the only way I know of. If you have found some other way then I can only say “congrats?”
Being “open to life” means not putting any artificial obsticals in the way. A couple that engages in relations either in the fertile time of the month or not are open to life as long as their intent is not to deliberately frustrate nature. To say that the man must climax each and every time in the woman is to say that if he doesn’t, he intends to frustrate nature. That simply isn’t true, any more than it is to say that a couple who uses NFP is frustrating nature by purposely NOT engaging in sex during the fertile time. One isn’t required to engage in sex to avoid sin.

You need to give up already, there is nothing in that statement that says the husband has to climax inside his wife. It says it has to retain it’s intrinsic relationship to the procreation of human life. I retained that relationship by not using any kind of birth control, therefore human life could result!
Bravo, sir!

That is just nonsense. The act must be procreative. An act which does not result in the man climaxing inside his wife cannot be procreative.

Ever hear of the cowper’s gland, its the gland that just proved your statement false

Fluids from the Cowper’s gland do NOT contain mobile sperm and pre-ejaculate fluids cannot cause a pregnancy.

Actully they do contain active sperm, its the main cause of teen pregnency as many teens have used the “withdraw method” and still became pregnant from pre-ejaculatory fluids pushed out by the cowpers gland

You didn’t read what I said. The Cowper’s gland does not contain MOBILE sperm.
It is nonsense to state or even suggest that pre-ejaculate fluid can cause pregnancy. It does not.

By the way deliberate withdrawal before orgasm is a contraceptive act which is a sin of grave matter.

It is a medical FACT that cowpers fluid can cause pregnancy

No it is not and as for the main cause of teen pregnancy being pre-ejaculate fluid that is just laughable. Where on earth did you get that information?

Well that is simply not true if that is what you were taught.
Search the internet and see if you can find any information that shows the main cause of teens pregnancy is pre-ejaculate fluid. If you find it give me the link.

I don’t think you can state definitively one way or the other whether pre-ejaculate can cause pregnancy as there appears to be conflicting data. I was always taught that it could result in pregnancy.
Can a woman get pregnant from pre-ejaculation? Pre-ejaculation is the liquid that seeps out of the penis before ejaculation occurs. This fluid is released from the cowpers gland, located at the top of the urethra. The purpose of this fluid is to reduce the acidity in the urethra and provide lubricant for the sperm that is released once ejaculation occurs. Most guys have no control over it and cannot feel it coming out. There is much conflicting data on whether this fluid contains sperm that can result in pregnancy. Some studies have concluded it does contain sperm and others have concluded it does not. Most sources do agree that without definitive confirmation, other precautions should still be taken to protect from pregnancy and STI transmission.

In other words I was correct when I said it is NOT a medical fact that pre-ejaculate fluids can cause pregnancy.
Also, although there is a debate on whether there is sperm at all those that say there is admit such sperm is NOT mobile and so cannot cause pregnancy.

I hope the poster who claims it is a medical fact and that most teen pregnancies are caused by pre-ejaculate fluids goes back to his teacher and sets them straight.

By the way this really has nothing to do with this thread.

All sex acts within marriage MUST be procreative and open to fertiity. The only way that can happen is when the husband climaxes inside his wife.
If he deliberately withdraws prior to orgasm then that is a sin of grave matter.
If he deliberately refuses to enter his wife and climaxes outside of her then that is a sin of grave matter.
Let us be clear. Any foreplay and sexual activity between husband and wife is only permitted if it is completed by the husband climaxing inside his wife.

Actually our nfp coach who is a nurse practitioner told us you CAN get pregnant from pre ejaculate. I highly doubt she would lie to us! You need to stop replying to this post all together. In the past you have responded pretty good to some of my questions, but with this one you are totally off base and I am losing respect for you.

While it may not be a “medical fact that pre-ejaculate fluids can cause pregnancy,” it is still widely known that pregnancy can result from these fluids. It isn’t an *either/or *situation. It would be factually incorrect to state that "pre-ejaculate fluids cannot cause pregnancy."

Le me ask you this, then; is an act procreative and “open to life” when a couple purposely abstains from the fertile period with the express intention of avoiding pregnancy, and engages in the act during the infertile period when the chance of pregnancy is at its lowest and the sex act can be used as a means to an end as something pleasurable without the consequence of pregnancy?
