When it comes to these kinds of studies, the media seems to consistently confuse correlation and causation.

Are these teens are depressed because they are sexually active, or are these teens are sexually active because they are depressed?

Granted, teens are better off when they aren’t depressed OR sexually active, but it might be a good to know what caused what.

I also agree. There is the additional posibility that neither is the cause of the other. Other studies have shown that girls raised without fathers are more likely to have both promiscuity and depression in their futures. Human behavior is very complex and psychology is still in its infancy as real science. Science can neither prove or disprove free will.

One of my cousins earned a PhD in psychology in part for a study that showed people ate more popcorn at scary movies than they did for other types of movies.(Apparently all the good subjects for doctoral disertations were taken.😃 ) The study even made it into the general press(in the page 3 “weird news” section). Was this study responsible for the endless series of “Friday the 13th” movies? Maybe–or maybe theater owners already knew their customers and that they made more profit from the concessions than they did from ticket sales.

Is it because sacry movies tend to cause people to eat popcorn? Or is it because people who like to watch scary movies also tend to like to eat popcorn, while people who watch tear-jerkers don’t normally care much for popcorn? Or is it caused by the tear-jerker movies themselves which depress peoples appitites for popcorn?
