Well, I am in a dilemma of whether or not to expose some disturbing behaviors of a potential future SSPX priest.

This person claims to be discerning for the priesthood and since he is an extremely traditionalist, he said he would choose SSPX. His decision was supported by many priests in my parish, in front of whom he demonstrated a great deal of reverence, faith and piety.

But I know he is a two-faced person. His piety might be genuine, but in a morbid or twisted way. I accidentally discovered it because I happen to know his mother language, which is foreign to 99.5% of the parishioners and his circle of friends, therefore I had the access to some of his posts online that nobody else has.

How did I discover the posts were made by this particular man? By accident. One day when I was browsing on online Catholic forum in this foreign language, to my dismay, I found a picture of our priest wearing a Christmas reindeer outfit, and under this picture were verbal attacks stating that the priest being too “modern”, followed by posts ridiculing in agreement. Instantly I remembered this is the picture that my priest shared privately only within his friends on FB, and since he was the only one who speaks this language in the parish, I easily discovered his identity. I sent him a message letting him know who I am, and told him that is not very nice abusing the trust of his priest and ridiculing him online. He apologized and deleted his post. I thought he learned a lesson.

Later, the priest asked him and I to help with a ministry work to evangelize people who speaks this foreign language, I kept quiet about his previously inappropriate behavior, but kept a close eye on him. Later, the director told me that this person attempted to manipulate people by lying to them and fabricating false message from this priest so that people would not attend this “modern” church but to a more “traditional”, or better still, SSPX parish for Latin Mass. The director therefore told me that this person is too complicated to be trusted with evangelization ministry in this parish, and would never invite him again in the future.

These two incidents happened two year ago, and I have helped to cover up his behaviors and remain silent to the priests. I also let him know that I know his online identity so that he better be more discreet. However, his online behavior is just getting more disturbing recently.

He kept posting extremely conservative and strongly opinionated posts, attacking churches he thinks to be too “modern”, or twisting the Code of the church that all females should cover their heads, things like that. When I tried to comment, there would always be another ID making verbally abusive, graphic, and sexually threatening comments under mine, such as “modernist b***** should be raped by 10 men in the a***”, to say the very least. The ID threatens and describes graphically how he would rape me and kill me to hell. Since this foreign forum is not well maintained as the American ones, the only person who may delete and block unwanted comments is the one who starts the thread. However, having read all these threatening comments against me, he did nothing, or even encouraged this person by blocking me, not him. This happened many times.

Therefore, I did some research and found out actually, this person and the one who threatens me are very close. They both started a small and secretive online forum with only around 10 person, and the forum’s name is “SSPX”. In the forum, this “future priest” had a lot of interaction with the one who threatens to get me raped. The most disturbing message I found, is that BOTH of them want to be a SSPX priest.

I feel this Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has a lot of grudge against people, his priest and the parish, and is manipulative in nature. I think he is rather a religious frantic then a qualified candidate for priesthood, even it’s SSPX. However, by deception, he is still supported and even favored by the priests who know nothing about his frantic side. I am in a serious debate of whether or not expose his sec secretive side hat there would be one fewer problematic priest in the future.

Personally, I never feel safe on that foreign Catholic forum again. Based on the abusive messages his violent companion sent me, he seems to know a great deal of my privacy and it’s easy to know who leaked it to him. Since the “future priest” would avoid meeting me in real life, it is difficult to confront him face to face, as well.

I am sorry to hear about the threats to you, especially coming from men who are discerning to the priesthood.

If you choose to take this to the appropriate persons, I suggest you frame it carefully. Your post talks about how this man is conservative, and wants to go SSPX. If you let the conservatism color your report, it could be perceived as being based in a difference in preference. And, it shouldn’t come off that way, because the issues have nothing to do with SSPX versus “modern” viewpoints on the liturgy.

Follow your conscience on whether you bring this to someone’s attention. If you do, get screenshots of these forums, marshal the evidence, and submit it. At that point, it’s out of your hands.

I would send what you have to the Bishop of your diocese and leave it with him.

It’s much easier to collect the graphic messages than proving his association with his online identity… unless he uploaded his ID card photo under his screen name.

Thank you very much for your advice. I will pay attention to be neutral about my perspective.

You Diocese likely has a Safe Environment hotline. Call it. Let the authorities handle it. You just turn in the evidence. It’s anonymous.

The violence against women threat is enough to make me suggest the police should be involved. But the head of the SSPX in that country needs to be aware that he is posting such things, too.

Thank you but again, I lack the evidence to prove his association with his web name. The only prove would be his post with the priest’s picture but he deleted it.

It’s up to them to investigate, not you. All you have to have is a strong suspicion, and you can certainly tell them that he has deleted odd info.
You can still report.
They decide if it’s something or nothing.
But I don’t think you can sit on this info, especially in light of this remarks about rape.

Clearly if he would be applying to the SSPX it may be charitable to let them have a copy of your information as well, then they will be able to spot his application when they receive it.
